There is no doubt that on any given Friday it is tough to win in the WMC. This season two teams emerged in the Rivers division, North Muskegon and Mason County Central. As for Hesperia they are sort of in a standstill. Three straight 2-7 seasons and a 1-7 season before that has the Panthers looking at themselves in the mirror.
Two wins early left hope in the program, although a winless rest of the season has fans fast forwarding to basketball season.
The Panthers posted a -112-point differential which isn’t great although better than the 2004 season where it was -415.
In week one, Hesperia hosted Farwell a team from the middle of the state. The Panthers welcomed them in then, sent them back with a shutout, winning 13-0. Senior Blake Sayer at QB completed nine of his fifteen passes for 114 yards and a TD pass. Fellow senior Ian Fox was his go-to guy finishing with five catches for 51 yards. Skylar Stalbaum, Hesperia’s featured back ran for 71 yards. Stalbaum also picked up an interception and eight tackles.
Hesperia’s second win game the very next week with another shutout, this time decisively. Winning 54-0 against conference foe Holton, the offense showed many signs of explosiveness. Stalbaum had himself a night, scoring four touchdowns. Sayer had a breakout game in his own right, going 9-15 for 167 yards and two touchdown passes.
The offense would manage to put up 28 points the following week against White Cloud, however, the Panthers would also give up a 50 bomb.
