Patience is a core value at Montague Equestrian, a program where the balance between skill, teamwork, and resilience is essential. Recently, Amanda Cederquist and Lily Rice joined CatchMark SportsNet to reflect on their experiences, the season, and what it means to be part of this tight-knit team. This year, Montague celebrated a major accomplishment, claiming the title of Regional Champions!
Much like track and field, equestrian sports consist of multiple events, each scored individually, creating a dynamic where riders can shine as individuals and contribute to the overall team success. This dual structure brings unique challenges and rewards, something Amanda and Lily know well.
Both riders shared how they’ve grown through the program. Amanda emphasized the importance of patience: “It has helped because you have to be patient with your horse, with your teammates… everyone is learning.” She spoke about how this value transcends riding, becoming a life lesson she takes into every situation. “You have to be patient in everything you do,” she added, touching on the mental strength equestrian sports demand. For Lily, the sport has taught her the art of flexibility and “going with the flow.” She said, “There are so many things that can change your plan… you have to be flexible.”
When asked about the blend of individual and team achievement in equestrian, Amanda described how both aspects are deeply interconnected. “When you go in for your class or event, it’s about you and your horse at that moment. But, at the end of the day, you’re riding for your teammates too.” The ability to perform individually while also carrying the team’s aspirations creates a unique bond among the riders and teaches them to support one another under pressure.
Leadership also plays a key role in their team dynamic. Amanda emphasized the responsibility she feels to guide and inspire her teammates, saying, “It’s important to be a leader on the team to encourage others.” Her approach to leadership reflects the supportive and collaborative culture Montague Equestrian fosters.
As the interview wrapped up, Amanda grew emotional while discussing her senior year. Though her time as a team rider is ending, she looks forward to staying with the program as a coach. Lily summed it up with a smile, saying, “She’s stuck with us!” Their bond speaks to the tight connections riders form within Montague Equestrian, with each season becoming a chapter in a shared journey.
Before saying goodbye, both riders expressed gratitude for everyone who supports their passion and hard work. “Thank you to all our supporters—our school, parents, horses, teammates—without them, we couldn’t do what we do.” It’s clear that Montague Equestrian is more than a team; it’s a community dedicated to each rider’s growth and success, both on and off the horse.
