Navea Gauthier is one of the top athletes in the state. This season has exemplified her insane athletic ability. The senior has amassed a mind-numbing 833 kills this season alone. She lead her team to 24-16-3 overall record. Only taking second in conference by a very well balanced Fremont Packers team, who themselves went 12-0 in conference play.
Shelby High School’s standout player has become a 6-foot-2 force, earning herself some recognition as both, the most dominant offensive player in Michigan high school volleyball history and Miss Volleyball candidate.
At the Sparta Invitational this weekend, Gauthier reached 3,615 career kills, breaking the state record previously held by Alisha Glass of Leland, who finished with 3,584 kills in 2006. Gauthier now ranks second in the national record books, trailing Kryssi Daniels from Alabama, who collected 4,019 kills from 2006 to 2009.
An All-State athlete, Gauthier is set to make her Big Ten debut this December, graduating early from Shelby High School to join the Ohio State University volleyball program. Gauthier and the Tigers will enter the postseason with a 24-16-3 record and find themselves hosting Mason County Central (24-15-3) tonight at 5:30 p.m. in the Division 3 district semifinals.
This season, the Tigers have a good shot at a deep playoff run with a squad that includes senior setter Audrey Horton, junior outside hitter Brylee Friedman, junior middle hitter Kylie Brown, freshman Jayna Burmeister, and junior libero Delanie Smith.
