Holton announces it will field 2022 varsity football team after weeks of uncertainty

Red Devils will not have JV squad with only 23 players total in grades 9-12.

HOLTON — Holton’s football practice began Thursday morning like many others. Stretching and calesthenics, then some running and a little drill work.

The Red Devils had good reason for a little extra pep in their step, however. They received the news they’d been awaiting.

Holton will field a varsity football team in 2022, first-year head coach Tommy Moore announced to his huddled team early in Thursday’s practice. The Red Devils saw 23 players in grades 9-12 show up for practice this week after days of uncertainty over their season status.

After a meeting Wednesday between Holton’s coaching staff, athletic director Dustin DuBeau and the freshmen in the football program, it was decided for the Red Devils to field a varsity squad.

Holton will not field a junior varsity team this season, but Moore and the Red Devils are excited for Friday night lights and the opportunity to compete.

“It’s definitely a relief to know that we get to play another snap of football,” Holton senior halfback/safety Teagan Bayne said.

Added Red Devils junior quarterback Gavin Wheeler: “I’m just glad I can see the seniors play their last year of football.”

Holton’s roster features three seniors, six juniors, seven sophomores and seven freshmen.

Holton kicks off their season Friday, Aug. 26, at Manistee. Both schools are newcomers to the West Michigan Conference.
