Junior duo powers Whitehall to softball sweep at Montague

MONTAGUE — Evelyn Darke’s hitting power and Megan LeaTrea’s endurance in the pitcher’s circle led the way for Whitehall’s softball team in a sweep of host Montague in a West Michigan Conference Lakes Division doubleheader Tuesday.

Darke homered twice in a 23-1, five-inning victory for Whitehall in Game 1, while LeaTrea picked up a pair of pitching wins, including by a tighter 8-6 score in Game 2.

Whitehall improves to 3-9 overall and 2-2 in the WMC Lakes, while Montague slips to 6-6 and 4-2, respectively.

In Game 1, Darke went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and four runs scored for Whitehall. Annabel Kevwitch finished 3-for-4 with a double, two triples, four RBIs, and four runs scored for the Vikings. Bella Fogus, Janie Fagan, and Harper Leon had three hits apiece for Whitehall, while Kierra Hyns had two hits.

LeaTrea scattered four hits with two strikeouts and two walks in five innings pitched to earn the win in the first game.

Montague’s Abby Thommen had two hits in Game 1, while Reagan Cederquist hit a home run for the Wildcats.

In the second game, Fogus doubled among her three hits to go with two RBIs and two runs scored. Kevwitch and Taylor Ottinger had two hits apiece for Whitehall. LeaTrea allowed six runs (two earned) on nine hits with nine strikeouts and one walk in six innings of work en route to picking up the nightcap win.

Kennedy Johnson paced Montague in Game 2 with three hits and two runs scored, while Sophia Beishuizen doubled and tripled for the Wildcats.
