Stunning first-game rally by Hart softball leads to sweep at Montague

Hart’s softball team appeared down and out in the first game of a West Michigan Conference nondivisional doubleheader Thursday at Montague.

The Pirates’ outlook changed dramatically in the top half of the sixth inning, when they scored 10 runs on six errors and six hits, including Abby Hicks’ go-ahead, three-run home run. They wiped out a seven-run deficit in the inning en route to a 12-10 victory in the six-inning game.

In the second game, Hart kept rolling on the way to a 15-5, five-inning victory to complete the sweep.

Hicks finished 3-for-4 in the first game for Hart (8-4 overall). Kelsey Copenhaver had a pair of hits in Game 1 for the Pirates, while Julia Bishop went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Gabby Quijas picked up the pitching win in relief, entering the circle in the third and allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

In the second game, Copenhaver hit her first career home run. Copenhaver, Reese Smith, Makenna Carrier, Leah Walker, and Caydence Bateson paced Hart with two hits apiece. Smith picked up the pitching win, allowing five runs (two earned) on three hits with three strikeouts and six walks.

For Montague (6-4), Hayden Boutell had three hits in the opener, including a double, along with four RBIs and three runs scored to lead the way. Kennedy Johnson, Kayden Johnson, and Jocelyn Rodriguez-Perez had two hits apiece for the Wildcats, while Abby Thommen tripled. In the second game, Rodriguez-Perez doubled for the ‘Cats.
