Before the big game, Mona Shores, undefeated at 4-0, was determined to maintain their winning streak and notch that fifth victory. Meanwhile, Muskegon, facing early-season challenges, sought a crucial rivalry win to kickstart their momentum and turn the tide in their favor for the remainder of the season.
For the Sailors, it would not be easy. Hackley Field is one of the hardest places to play in all of Michigan. Coach Matt Koziak knows this, saying “This is not an easy place to win…I love playing here; the atmosphere is always electric.”
Even so, Mona Shores was able to march into enemy territory and snatch a hard-fought road victory.
The Sailors wasted no time making their mark, scoring a quick touchdown within the first seconds of their opening drive after electing to receive the kickoff. Muskegon, eager to respond, stumbled on their return drive and handed possession back to Mona Shores. The Sailors threatened again, driving the ball to Muskegon’s 34-yard line as the first quarter came to a close.
Entering the second quarter deep in Muskegon territory, Mona Shores punched in another touchdown, taking a commanding lead. With two efficient drives, the Sailors appeared poised to dominate the game. But Muskegon, known for its grit and resilience, was not ready to fold.
Going into the second quarter, at Muskegon’s 34 yard line, the Sailors were able to punch one in. After two quick hitting drives, Mona Shores look to be dominating this one. However, Muskegon, being one of the scrappiest teams in the state, were not going to go down easy. Getting the ball back, they made a solid kickoff run and James Young and crew were able to get one in the endzone. Starting the chase back up for the Big Reds. After a solid kickoff return, the Big Reds capitalized with a touchdown, closing the gap and setting the stage for a back-and-forth battle.
From that point on, the game became a tug-of-war. Mona Shores would find the endzone, only to have Muskegon respond in kind. Despite Muskegon’s relentless pursuit, the Sailors managed to stay just out of reach, maintaining a steady lead that Muskegon could not quite overcome. In the end, Mona Shores secured the victory, 42-27.
The night was defined by the play of both senior quarterbacks. For Muskegon, James Young struggled to find his rhythm, completing 20 of 37 passes for a 54% completion rate. In contrast, Mona Shores’ Jonathan Pittman put on a masterful performance, going 14-for-19 with a 73.6% completion rate. Both players were nominated for CatchMark SportsNet’s Player of the Week, last week, this game proved exactly why that was.
One of the key factors in the Sailors’ success was their ability to convert on fourth down, completing 66% of their attempts and frustrating Muskegon’s defense in critical moments.
Defensively, Mona Shores also found ways to disrupt Muskegon’s offense. Although statistics only tell part of the story, the Sailors consistently pressured Young, forcing him out of the pocket and into several scrambles. Solomon Robertson, a standout for Mona Shores, contributed significantly with eight tackles, anchoring a defense that overwhelmed Muskegon’s offensive line.
It wasn’t all blue and white for the Big Reds though. Muskegon did find some momentum in their passing game in the second half. Wide receiver Danelle Lawrance was a bright spot, hauling in eight receptions on 13 targets, helping to keep the Big Reds in the game.
For the first time in four years, including a playoff game, Mona Shores takes the “Battle for Muskegon”. Coach Koziak knows the job is not done yet, evident in his post game speech, they have much more to work on.
Mona Shores came into this one 4-0 and was able to improve that to 5-0. They will take on Forest Hills Northern next week. Muskegon came into this one 1-2 and they unfortunately, after the loss, are 1-3. They will take on GR Union next week.
