Game Preview: Battle of Muskegon

Muskegon and Mona Shores get set for what hopes to be an all-time classic.

Muskegon's

Muskegon – Two of Muskegon’s best, Mona Shores and Muskegon face off Friday night in a game that could alter the trajectory of both teams going forward. Both the Big Reds and the Sailors coming off of impressive wins.

Senior quarterback James Young and the rest of the Muskegon offense are starting to find their footing and are firing on all cylinders. In their game last Friday against GR Forest Hills Northern, the Big Reds posted 47 total points. In comparison, heading into the contest FHN hadn’t allowed over twenty points in a game all season.

Muskegon (1-2) respectively, has gone through a complete gauntlet to start its season. Facing arguably the number one ranked team in division three Zeeland West, then turning around and facing a powerhouse program in Rockford.

The Big Reds started its season a year ago 0-2 then won a state title. Can Muskegon copy the script from last year? It starts with winning against rival Mona Shores this week.

Muskegon's

It’s a completely different story for Mona Shores. Although they have as well played tough teams, the Sailors remain undefeated. Facing top schools such as Grand Blanc, River Rouge, Hamady, and Byron Center.

Mona Shores are led by HC Mike Koziak who began his Mona Shores coaching tenure back in 2011 a year after MS won just 2 games. In Koziak’s first season with the Sailors, his team finished 1-8. However, since that season Koziak has had his guys on a roll. Including playoff appearances in ten of the last twelve seasons and a state championship victory in 2020.

As for this season, the Sailors are led by senior signal-caller Jonathan Pittman. Mona Shores has been predominantly run-heavy so far this season and Pittman is a key part of their success on the ground.

Players to Watch

  • Muskegon senior N-kye Wynn: The six foot five offensive linemen for the Big Reds is a wall for opposing rushers. Wynn is currently committed to Rutgers University.
  • Muskegon senior James Young: The talented college prospect came over to Muskegon as a transfer from North Muskegon a year ago. Now he looks to contribute big-time under center around this already explosive Muskegon offense.
  • Mona Shores senior Jonathan Pittman: As mentioned before Pittman plays a vital role in the running for the Sailors but he can beat you through the air as well. Completing seven of nine attempts a week ago.
  • Mona Shores junior Tomarion Steward: An explosive back that possesses an incredible motor. Pittman’s counterpart in the Sailors’ rushing attack, Steward is primed for a huge game.
