ADA TOWNSHIP – Montague faced a challenging start to the 2024 season against a physically dominant Forest Hills Eastern team on Thursday.
The Hawks’ physicality up front, and solid skill position play paved the way for a nearly 400-yard offensive showcase, leading to a commanding 48-7 victory over the Wildcats.
Notable Statistics
Hawks QB Brendan Thompson completed 8 of 12 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown.
Sophomore running back Jordan Shabazz led the charge with 129 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including the score that initiated the running clock in the fourth quarter.
Senior Max Ferrick added 81 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, showcasing the Hawks’ balanced attack.
The Hawks had close to 400 yards of total offense.
Montague was held to 12 yards of rushing and allowed 5 sacks.
Quick Game Summary
Eastern quickly took control of the game after Montague’s initial three-and-out. Jackson Arnold returned a punt 70 yards to open the scoring. Ferrick followed up with two quick touchdowns, and by the second quarter, wide receiver David Molhoek added a 58-yard touchdown reception. Shabazz extended the lead to 34-0 with a 30-yard run before halftime.
Montague showed some life early in the second half when Eastern, opting to start with their second-string offense, was stopped on fourth down deep in their own territory. Peterson capitalized with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Kellan Francis. However, Eastern quickly regained control, and Shabazz’s 90-yard touchdown run sealed the game.
Looking Ahead
Eastern (1-0), will face Greenville on Sept. 6. and Montague (0-1) will look to regroup as they prepare for their conference opener against Oakridge.
