New Season, Same Drive: Whitehall Basketball Preps for Another Historic Run

Whitehall basketball is back and loaded for another promising season.

The 2023 season was a historic year for Whitehall basketball, finishing with a perfect 22-0 record in the regular season. However, playoff basketball can turn wins into losses and losses into wins. The Vikings’ special run ended dramatically with a loss to Spring Lake in the district semifinal.

Heading into the game, Whitehall was ranked #3 in Division II. With consistent shooting and big-time plays from its seniors’, Spring Lake was able to pull off the upset card.

After a successful football season for Whitehall, many of its athletes have their sights set on a deep playoff run in basketball.

With its two leading scorers from last season returning, Camden Thompson and Kal Koehler, Whitehall is primed to avenge its playoff loss.

Thompson, who is committed to play both basketball and football at the University of Western Michigan, is hungry and on a mission this season for the Vikings. The guard/forward/big averaged 20 points per game and 17 rebounds per game on 50/33/68 shooting splits.

Koehler stands tall at 6’4″. However, don’t let his height deceive you—he’s also a dangerous shooter. Koehler averaged 12 points per game last year while shooting 34% from three-point land.

Heading into his fourth year as the varsity basketball coach, Christian Subdon has high goals and expectations for the season. Subdon boasts a career record of 57-13, along with three playoff wins.

Three big departures from the starting lineup—Camar Ready, DJ Jamison, and Kyle Stratton—open up new spots for guys ready to make an impact.

Senior Brock Morningstar is one of them. While not new to varsity play, Morningstar played a huge role as the sixth man a year ago. The versatile guard averaged 4.7 points per game with 15 minutes of playing time per game.

Senior Finn Muller opted to not play a season ago. Muller is projected to be the starting point guard will give the Vikings a dangerous back court with Morningstar.

Big man Corde Anderson, guard Hunter Osborne, and forward Cy Black will battle for the remaining starting spots. Black, a shooter, will fit in nicely with the Vikings’ style of play.

Subdon had no interest in scheduling free wins, so the Vikings will face a number of tough matchups.

Whitehall will open its season by traveling to Hudsonville, then two days later will host Spring Lake.
