On the Mark: Week 8 football picks guest an Oakridge boy who now serves the area

Brett Adkins was a rugged football player who also thrived in baseball. Now he’s a financial advisor for Edward Jones.

Back in the day, circa mid-1990s, Brett Adkins was a load as a running back and linebacker for some very good Oakridge football teams.

He also was a standout on the baseball field.

Adkins is still sturdily built these days, but instead of using brawn he’s employing his brain power as a financial advisor for Edward Jones in Norton Shores. He’s done quite well for himself.

Trust me when I say, this guy is doing what he can to help others in the Greater Muskegon area. CatchMark SportsNet is just one of several groups of people he’s helping. Edward Jones-Brett Adkins sponsors some of our content, including this “On the Mark” that you’re reading.

Adkins excelled in sports and he’s thriving in the business world, but let’s see what he still knows about high school football.

Adkins is the Week 8 guest picker for “On the Mark,” title sponsored by Durga Insurance Group. Our Week 7 guest picker, Chris Dykema of Greenridge Realty, posted a strong 10-3 record.

This is a tough group of panelists. Jordan Durga is still the man to beat, but Bill O’Connell is nipping at his heels after a 13-0 week.

Let’s see what you’ve got, Mr. Adkins!

Here are Week 8 picks for games involving West Michigan Conference and Greater Muskegon area teams:

DECAMP’S DISSECTION

Oakridge (4-3) at Ravenna (3-4), 7 p.m. Friday: We’re putting this game in “DeCamp’s Dissection” because our guest picker is an Oakridge alum and I’m a Ravenna grad. It’s as simple as that.

According to the latest Snooze2You projections, Oakridge would be in the playoffs at this point while Ravenna would be on the outside looking in. However, the Division 7 Bulldogs do have a couple of great opportunities in front of them with the Division 5 Eagles this week and Division 6 Hart next week. Plenty of playoff-point possibilities there.

Oakridge has dominated the all-time series with Ravenna, 43-12-1, but several of those games have been slobber knockers. Will the Eagles further solidify their playoff spot? Can the Bulldogs rise to the occasion and pick up a really big win?

Prediction: Oakridge 28, Ravenna 20

Grand Rapids Union (2-5, 1-4 OK Green) at Muskegon (5-2, 5-0), 7 p.m. Friday: You’re probably asking, “Why is he including this game in ‘DeCamp’s Dissection?'”

Well, it’ll be the 500th game played at historic Hackley Stadium. That’s why. Pretty amazing when you think about it.

Also, including this game here gives me another reason to link below Monday’s CatchMark SportsNet Podcast, featuring Muskegon offensive line coach Matt Bolles and two of his senior standouts in Miguel Botello and Karl Brooks. It was a great conversation, so you should watch.

Prediction: Muskegon 55, Grand Rapids Union 6
