Racing to the Top: Zoey Smith’s Rise in Supercross

In the high-octane world of Supercross, where grit and determination are the fuel that drives success, Zoey Smith has carved a name for herself as a formidable competitor. At just 15 years old, this young racer from Twin Lake has already amassed an impressive track record that belies her age. Wearing the #18 on her Honda 150R, Zoey a freshman at Reeths-Puffer High School, spends her summer tearing up dirt tracks across Michigan.

Motocross vs Supercross

Motocross and Supercross are off-road motorcycle races that differ primarily in track design and race format. Motocross is on natural, longer tracks with varied terrain, emphasizing endurance and adaptability. In contrast, Supercross takes place on shorter, man-made tracks, requiring precise technical skills due to the tight, technical layout. Motocross races are generally longer, while Supercross features shorter races.

A Passion Ignited Early

Zoey’s love affair with Supercross began at the tender age of 8. What started as a simple outing to watch her cousin race quickly turned into a life-changing moment. Enthralled by the roar of the engines and the thrill of the race, Zoey turned to her father, Marty, and declared her desire to race. From that moment on, there was no looking back. With the full support of her parents, Marty and Tonya, and her older sister Addyson, Zoey dove headfirst into the world of competitive racing.

Dominating the SJO Michigan State Fair Supercross Series

Zoey competes in the SJO Michigan State Fair Supercross series, where she has become a force to be reckoned with. Her rise through the ranks has been nothing short of spectacular. In 2018, she made waves as the runner-up in the Girls 11-15 and Trail 11-15 divisions. But that was just the beginning. Zoey went on to clinch the championship title in both of those divisions in  2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023, solidifying her status as one of the top young racers in the state. The 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but that only fueled Zoey’s determination to return stronger.

For the 2024 season, she is racing the Girls 11-15 and the Women 12 & up divisions. As of August 12, 2024,  she has raced in nine events. In the Girls 11-15 division, she has finished 1st in seven events and 2nd in the other two. In the Women 12 & Up division she has finished in 1st in all nine events.

Beyond the Track

When she’s not tearing up the track, Zoey is a typical teenager who loves video games, fishing, and music. She also enjoys running track at school, where her favorite subject is weightlifting—an activity that undoubtedly contributes to her strength and endurance on the bike. Zoey’s favorite color is pink, and her favorite food is steak. She can often be found with a snow cone from the fair after she finishes racing.

A Bright Future Ahead

Zoey’s success in Supercross is a testament to her hard work, determination, and the unwavering support of her family. As she continues to grow and develop as both a racer and a young woman, there is little doubt that Zoey Smith has a bright future ahead of her. Whether on the track racing to victory or enjoying downtime with her family and friends, Zoey embodies the spirit of a true champion.

Her next racing goal is to race in The Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship, held annually on Loretta Lynn’s family ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. It is known as the world’s largest amateur motocross race.

In Supercross and Motocross, where the competition is fierce, Zoey stands out for her talent, passion, and dedication. As she continues pushing the boundaries of what she can achieve, the community will undoubtedly be cheering her on every step. Her 2024 season will wrap up on September 15.
