Ravenna softball pitching, hitting lineup dominant in opening sweep of Sparta

Bulldogs beat Spartans, 14-0 and 15-0, to set an early tone to their season.

RAVENNA — Ravenna’s softball team has some very lofty goals for the 2023 season. The Bulldogs certainly started off on the right foot Tuesday.

Ravenna’s pitching and hitting lineup were dominant in a season-opening sweep of visiting Sparta, as the Bulldogs won the first game, 14-0 in five innings, and the nightcap, 15-0 in four innings.

Here are more details and notables from the doubleheader:

  • In the first game, Emma Gillard picked up the pitching win for Ravenna. The right-hander allowed one hit (first batter of the game) and struck out four in three innings. Riley Homoly pitched in relief for the Bulldogs, allowing no hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
  • Addison Gillard went 2-for-4 with a double in Game 1, while Kara Postema was 2-for-4 with a two-run single that got the ‘Dogs on the board. Emma Herremans went 2-for-3 with a double, while Homoly had a hit. Emily Postema tripled and came around to score on the play on an error.
  • In the second game, Addison Gillard spun a no-hitter for Ravenna. She struck out seven and walked one.
  • Leading hitters for Ravenna in Game 2 were Emma Gillard going 3-for-3 with a home run, Emma Herremans 3-for-3, Emily Postema 2-for-2 with a triple, Homoly 2-for-2, Ellie Solem 2-for-3 and Macy Nelson 1-for-1.
