Hart-Shelby rivalry headlines this week’s basketball matchups

West Michigan Conference basketball competition has been stellar so far this year. What better way to continue that competition than with another proximity rivalry for the CatchMark SportsNet Game of the Week.

Thursday night, Shelby (5-2 overall, 3-2 WMC) visits neighboring rival Hart (4-4, 3-4) in a boys basketball clash. The CatchMark Game of the Week should tip off at approximately 7 p.m.

It’s always a big game when the neighboring schools square off, but intensity is increased per the close race in the conference.

Junior guard Parker Hovey is expected to lead the offensive charge for Hart, followed closely behind by fellow junior guard Diego Escamilla. Hovey has had an impressive season so far, averaging near 20 points per game.

A big 62-59 victory against Montague early last week will source some momentum for the Pirates heading into Thursday.

Shelby also pulled out a nice win in league play last week, defeating Whitehall 55-54, and will look to continue their streak in the rivalry matchup.

The Tigers have been paced by senior guard Joseph Hayes and junior forward Bishop Lee. The two standouts will look to give the Pirates some trouble and keep their team in the top half of the conference standings.

Here are the West Michigan Conference boys and girls basketball schedules for this week (Jan. 24-28):
