Spring Lake Lakers Season Review: Lakers Finish Three Games Under .500

Just a season ago, Spring Lake was in the playoffs with a (7-3) record. This season expressed the complete opposite outcome. A stretch during the season where the Lakers lost six straight games put them in an abysmal spot.

Finishing (3-6), SL kept fighting down the stretch. They picked up wins in week 8 and week 9. Putting up 108 points in those two weeks over Grand Rapids Christian and Allendale.

After beating Fruitport in week one, Spring Lake went on to lose four key games against OK-White opponents.

In the season opener, they defeated the Trojans 40-7. The Lakers carried a 26-0 lead heading into the break. Darrel Lawrence had a huge game to start his season, rushing for 134 yards on 20 carries.

Week 4 finally came for SL, they matched up against a perennial division 5 powerhouse, GR West Catholic. Spring Lake outgained West Catholic, 391 yards to 284. The Lakers very much held its own, losing by just three points 28-25.

Senior, Reid Grimmer, was the starter at QB. Grimmer coming off a broken Tibia and Fibula when he got injured in the pre-district game vs. Big Rapids last season. Grimmer led the Lakers to the fourth best offense in terms of points scored in the last decade.

To round out its season, Spring Lake played Allendale. Lawrence scored Four touchdowns and rushed for a game high of 97 yards. A 95-yard kick return from Oliver Smies in the closing moments of the first quarter gave SL a huge early lead. SL finished its season on a high note winning 46-16.

• Week 3 – Reeths Puffer defeated Spring Lake 26-14.
• Week 4 – West Catholic defeated Spring Lake 28-25.
• Week 5 – Wayland defeated Spring Lake 21-14.
• Week 6 – Forest Hills Eastern defeated Spring Lake 34-28.
• Week 7 – Hamilton defeated Spring Lake 24-14.
• Week 8 – Spring Lake defeated Grand Rapids Christian 62-28.
• Week 9 – Spring Lake defeated Allendale 46-16.
