WHITEHALL – The first meet of the season always serves as a crucial benchmark, allowing players to gauge their off-season progress. Clubs freshly dusted off and swings refined, the golfers stepped onto the hallowed grounds of White Lake Golf Club, a course steeped in 108 years of history.
In opening play, the Whitehall Vikings exploded with a well-rounded team score of 370. Their rivals, Montague, despite their valiant efforts, found themselves struggling to keep pace, trailing in the Vikings’ wake at a distant 405. The Norseman of North Muskegon followed Montague with a 427.
Whitehall’s dominance extended beyond the team score, as they showcased remarkable depth with four girls landing in the top 10. Senior Grace McDowell led the charge, firing a 16-over 87 to claim the individual lead. McDowell’s stellar performance set the tone for her teammates, with Riley Shafer (88), Morgan Garcia (96), and Felicity Dingman (99) all delivering strong rounds to solidify Whitehall’s early advantage.
The individual leaderboard saw a thrilling battle unfold. Fremont’s Lauren Roossinck and Ludington’s Madelyn Erndteman gave chase, carding scores of 23-over (94) and 24-over (95), respectively. Even so, McDowell’s opening salvo sent a clear message: the Vikings are hungry for a conference championship.
