West Michigan Conference basketball: Boys and girls roundup from Dec. 22, 2023

Oakridge boys use balanced effort for win at Potter’s House in running record to 8-1.

The holidays are upon us, but three boys basketball games and one girls contest involving West Michigan Conference teams took place Friday night.

Here is a roundup of the action from Dec. 22, 2023:

BOYS BASKETBALL

CORNERSTONE HOLIDAY CLASSIC

WHITEHALL 70, EAST GRAND RAPIDS 52: Kal Koehler scored 10 of Whitehall’s 18 first-quarter points and helped the Vikings build a 20-point halftime lead. The 6-foot-4 junior was named his team’s MVP for the game.

NONLEAGUE

OAKRIDGE 75, WYOMING POTTER’S HOUSE 58: Visiting Oakridge placed four players in double-figure scoring and nearly had a fifth in double digits en route to a solid road effort. It’s the Eagles’ eighth win in nine games.

“Oakridge started quick and answered each run of the Pumas,” Oakridge coach Tracy Ruel said about his team, which led 24-19 after one quarter and 42-31 at halftime before extending the margin with a 17-10 third quarter.

“It has been a very good start to the season, coming into the break with an 8-1 start. Coming out of the break, Oakridge will start out with a good OV team (which) has been playing really well this early season.”

RAVENNA 62, GRANT 57: Visiting Ravenna put together its most complete effort of the season, according to coach Courtney Kemp, using scoring balance to pick up the nonleague win. In a tight game throughout, Ravenna outscored Grant 11-7 in the second quarter and 17-16 in the third.

“The Dogs saw what four quarters of clean, disciplined basketball looked like at Grant,” Kemp said. “Clean defense and offensive execution were the difference for them. The type of offensive balance (we) have been seeking in this early season.”
