Fremont rallies past Grant behind Jordon McDonald’s big game.

Eight boys district basketball semifinal contests involving West Michigan Conference teams were played Wednesday night.

Here is a roundup of the action from March 8, 2023:

DIVISION 2 AT FRUITPORT

FRUITPORT 77, WHITEHALL 69 (OT): Host Fruitport erased a seven-point deficit in the final three minutes to force overtime, then the Trojans outscored Whitehall 17-9 in the extra frame to post a dramatic victory in this Division 2 district semifinal.

SPRING LAKE 74, OAKRIDGE 39: Oakridge stunned Spring Lake early as Matt Danicek hit three first-quarter 3-pointers and the upset-minded Eagles built a 15-10 lead. Oakridge held a 25-24 halftime edge before Spring Lake got rolling in the third quarter with a 26-6 scoring run.

Danicek led Oakridge with 14 points. Peyton Ruel scored six points and Jullian Primmer five for the Eagles, who close the season with an 11-13 record.

Eli Morrison scored a game-high 23 points for Spring Lake, hitting four second-half 3s. Zane Stahl added 16 points for the Lakers, while Wren Dephouse added 12.

Spring Lake (13-8) advances to Friday’s 7 p.m. district final against Fruitport (15-9).

DIVISION 2 AT BIG RAPIDS

HART 62, BIG RAPIDS 56: Parker Hovey scored 35 points, grabbed 20 rebounds and added seven assists and seven blocks for good measure in powering unbeaten Hart past host Big Rapids in a Division 2 district semifinal. Hovey also reached the 1,000-point milestone in his career.

DIVISION 2 AT COMSTOCK PARK

FREMONT 54, GRANT 49: Fremont rallied from an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit to earn a hard-fought victory over familiar foe Grant and punch a ticket to Friday’s 7 p.m. district final.

Jordon McDonald had 25 points and a season-high 20 rebounds in stepping up big for Fremont. Chaz Miller scored 18 points, including hitting a couple of big 3-pointers and some clutch free throws.

Fremont (12-11) will play in the district finals against Sparta (15-8), which defeated Grand Rapids West Catholic 63-49 in the other district semifinal.

DIVISION 3 AT HOLTON

NORTH MUSKEGON 68, RAVENNA 43: Ravenna scored the game’s first five points, but North Muskegon regrouped and led 22-17 entering the second quarter of this Division 3 district semifinal. The Norsemen extended their lead to 32-22 at halftime, then outscored the Bulldogs 38-21 in the second half.

Troy McManus scored a game-high 25 points for North Muskegon and grabbed five rebounds. Lamarkis Graham had nine points for the Norse, while Adam Dugener and Sam Gallo had eight points apiece and Denny Belmonte added seven points, five rebounds and five assists.

Dylan May led Ravenna with 17 points and five rebounds. Caleb Forsythe had nine points and three assists, while Carter Schullo added seven points and three rebounds for the Bulldogs, who close the season with a 9-15 record.

North Muskegon (18-4) advances to Friday’s 6 p.m. district final against Kent City (14-8), which beat Holton 55-35 in the other semifinal.

KENT CITY 55, HOLTON 35: Kent City built a 19-10 first-quarter lead and maintained a double-digit advantage entering the fourth quarter, when the Eagles outscored host Holton 11-1 in this Division 3 district semifinal.

Jarent Jaramillo scored a game-high 19 points for Kent City, while Seth Vanderwest had 10 points.

For Holton, Jayce McMillan had 12 points to lead the way. Keon McMillan had nine points and four rebounds, while Brodrick Fialek had seven points, six rebounds and four assists for the Red Devils, who finish the season 1-22.

DIVISION 3 AT MASON COUNTY CENTRAL

SHELBY 54, MASON COUNTY CENTRAL 51: Shelby beat Mason County Central on its home court for the second time in as many weeks to advance in this Division 3 district.

Mason Garcia scored a game-high 18 points, grabbed four rebounds and dished five assists to lead Shelby. Bishop Lee, Wyatt Dickman and Phillip Hayes scored 11 points apiece for the Tigers. Hayes had seven rebounds, while Dickman had four rebounds and two assists. Carson Claeys added six assists and four rebounds.

Will Chye led Mason County Central with 13 points and six rebounds. Jack VanderHaag scored 11 points and Kolden Myer had 10 points and seven rebounds for the Spartans, who finish with a 15-8 record.

Shelby (13-11) advances to Friday’s 7 p.m. district final against White Cloud (13-9), which beat Hesperia 65-33 in the other semifinal.

WHITE CLOUD 65, HESPERIA 33: Hesperia’s basketball season came to an end with a Division 3 district semifinal loss to White Cloud.

Hesperia finishes with a 4-18 record.
