West Michigan Conference Football Preview 2024: Shelby Tigers Season Outlook

New Season, New Energy, Same Tiger Pride

The smell of burning leaves, the taste of apple cider, and the sound of cheering fans.

Passionately, Shelby Tigers football is entering another chapter under seasoned head coach Phil Fortier. After another rough season last year, the Tigers are ready to prove they’re a force to be reckoned in the West Michigan Conference. Fortier brings decades of coaching experience and a proven track record of success, aiming to revitalize the program and build a winning culture in Shelby. He is determined to reignite the passion for football at Shelby High School.

While the Tigers’ future is undeniably bright, with a wealth of budding talent emerging from their JV program, they may face some challenges this season due to their youth. A portion of their key players are underclassmen, which could lead to some growing pains as they adjust to the varsity level. However, the arrival of quarterback Isaac Garcia is a major boost for the team. His skillset perfectly complements the Tigers’ run-heavy offense, and he has the potential to be a game-changer. On the defensive side of the ball, the towering presence of David Purdy at defensive tackle will be crucial. Purdy’s ability to anchor the line and disrupt opposing offenses will undoubtedly make him a pivotal figure for the Tigers.

Key Players to Watch

Isaac Garcia, Junior, QB: A dynamic first-year quarterback with a blistering pace, Isaac Garcia enters the season ready to ignite the field. His raw speed makes him a constant threat to opposing defenses, and his agility allows him to navigate the pocket with ease. Garcia’s eagerness to prove himself could make him a breakout star, and fans are excited to see how he harnesses his impressive athleticism in game situations.

Eli Kelley, Junior, K: Boasting a booming leg and undeniable accuracy, junior kicker Eli Kelley is set to make a major impact for the Tigers. Sending kicks consistently through the uprights, and his impressive range gives the team a reliable scoring option from long distances. Kelley’s composure under pressure and his ability to deliver in crucial moments will be invaluable in fourth-down situations and special teams plays. Expect Kelley to be a difference-maker as he helps secure vital points for the Tigers throughout the season.

AJ Melchor, Senior, RB/LB: A proven force with over 600 yards and 6 touchdowns last season, Melchor is poised to dominate in the Tigers’ run-first attack. His lightning speed and relentless determination make him a nightmare for opposing defenses. Melchor’s impact isn’t limited to offense, though. He’s a tackling machine at linebacker, ready to lead the charge and create havoc for opposing offenses.

The Tigers’ will take on a week one (August 29th, 2024) White Cloud squad.
