West Michigan Conference football roundup for 2023 Week 2 (Sept. 1)

Two weeks of the 2023 high school football season is already history for West Michigan Conference teams.

Here is a roundup of Week 2 games that took place Thursday, Aug. 31.

Whitehall 55, Tecumseh 0: Kyle Stratton passed for four touchdowns and rushed for two more in powering visiting Whitehall (2-0) to a dominating win over Tecumseh (1-1).

Montague 39, Ravenna 34: Paul Olson and Mason Darke both turned in big games to lead host Montague (1-1), which saw an 18-point lead early in the fourth quarter slip away but held on against Ravenna (0-2).

North Muskegon 41, Muskegon Catholic Central 21: James Young was on fire, completing 21 of 25 passes for 398 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions in visiting North Muskegon’s runaway win over Muskegon Catholic Central. Six of Young’s passes went to Landon Christensen, who racked up an eye-popping 246 yards and four TDs. TJ Byard made eight catches for 78 yards for the Norse (2-0). Tristan Thomas ran six times for 58 yards and a TD, while Ben Meyers had five carries for 43 yards and a score. Defensively, Henry Hussman paced North Muskegon with 14 tackles, while Drew Bartos had 11 stops, AJ Larkin 10, and Alec Newville seven. MCC slips to 0-2 on the season.

Hudsonville Unity Christian 33, Oakridge 21: Host Oakridge outgained Unity Christian 430-354, including 372-283 in rushing yards, and held a whopping advantage in total plays (72-33) but the opportunistic Crusaders (1-1) came away with the win. The Eagles’ Trever Jones finished with a game-high 225 rushing yards and two TDs on 37 carries. Teammate Evan Miller ran 14 times for 103 yards, plus he completed 4 of 13 passes for 58 yards with one TD and one interception. Brody Jennings led Oakridge (1-1) defensively with seven tackles, while Jullian Primmer and Braydon Peterson notched five stops apiece and Aiden Johnston four.

Orchard View 28, Wyoming Godwin Heights 26: Visiting Orchard View won the back-and-forth contest and improved to 2-0 on the young season. The Cardinals outrushed the Wolverines, 260-124. Four different players scored rushing touchdowns for OV: Enrique Gutierrez (56 yards), Alex Theile (2 yards), Mason Tuttle (3 yards), and Justin Switzer (1 yard). Stephon Oakes led the Cardinals with 70 rushing yards on 11 carries, while Gutierrez had 60 yards on three attempts. Theile led OV’s defense with five solo tackles. Oakes and Curtis Scott notched four solo tackles each for the Cardinals.

Ludington 55, Shelby 6: Cam Gunsell finished 11-of-17 passing for 132 yards and three TDs, plus he ran for 40 yards and another score in leading host Ludington to the victory. Gage Jones had three catches for 45 yards and a TD, plus he ran for a score and notched 11 tackles for the Orioles (1-1). Daniel Ramirez made three receptions for 41 yards and a TD, plus he recorded nine tackles and had a pick-6. Joe Bentz scored a rushing TD, while David Shillinger had a receiving TD. No stats were reported for Shelby (0-2).

Manistee 58, Mason County Central 8: Host Manistee and MCC were tied at 8 early in the game, but the Mariners erupted for 50 first-half points en route to the WMC nondivisional victory. Manistee (2-0) rushed for 318 yards (10.8 per carry), led by Kaden Kott’s 122 yards and three TDs on only six carries. Dayvion Neal-Berry was 2-for-2 passing for 71 yards and a TD. Brayden Schweitzer packed Manistee’s defense with nine tackles, while Caius Johns and Braydon Sorenson had eight stops each. Tyler Norton led MCC (1-1) with 103 rushing yards on 19 carries. Defensively, Marcus Lebrun paced the Spartans with four tackles.

Fremont 15, Beaverton 12: Visiting Fremont rallied for a road victory, its first win of the season. Asa Barnhard rushed for 106 yards and two TDs on 20 carries for the Packers (1-1). Khai Noordyk added a two-point conversion and Ben Mellema booted a PAT. Fremont outrushed Beaverton (1-1) by a 224-132 margin. Connor Pettis led Fremont’s defense with four solo tackles and four assists.

Hart 52, White Cloud 28: Host Hart ran wild in piling up 557 rushing yards on 65 carries in the nonleague victory to make the Pirates 2-0 on the young season. Joseluis Andaverde led the way with 259 yards and a TD on 27 carries. Eman Hertzler rushed 10 times for 163 yards and three TDs for Hart. Andaverde made plays all over the field, also recording 11 tackles and snagging an interception. Connor Edwards notched his third interception of the season for the Pirates, while Chase Gale also picked off a pass.

Perry 42, Holton 0: Visiting Holton slipped to 0-2 on the season with the nonleague loss to Perry. The Red Devils’ Rylee Pierce was 3-of-4 passing for 25 yards. Aaron Boone rushed for 17 yards for Holton. Perry is now 1-1 on the season.

St. Louis 16, Hesperia 6: No stats or details were submitted. Hesperia and St. Louis are both 1-1 on the season.
