Hart, Ravenna and Whitehall win district championships.

Several West Michigan Conference wrestling squads competed in team districts Wednesday night.

Here is a roundup of the action from Feb. 8, 2023, highlighted by district champions Whitehall, Hart and Ravenna.

DIVISION 3 AT HART

Hart cruised to another district championship with a 68-9 victory over neighboring rival Shelby in a Division 3 district final at Hart.

In the semifinals, Shelby defeated Mason County Central, 48-36.

Winning matches for Hart in the finals were Bryce Jorrisen (138), Josue Salgado (144), Guillermo Ortega (150), Darice Mosley (157), Alex Hicks (165), Manuel Vasquez (175), Zane Thomas (190), Ivan Lara (285), Emmanuel Ortega (113), Halen Boos (120), Austin Martinez (126) and Trayce Tate (132).

“I thought the kids wrestled really well. We were fired up to compete for a district title in our home gym and I think that showed,” said Hart first-year coach Elijah Flores, whose Pirates (29-5) advance to next week’s regional against an opponent and at a site yet to be determined.

“It’s been a long season a lot of our guys have made tremendous progress throughout the season. We really leaned on our senior leadership and some of our young guys really stepped up. It’s been a great first year for me. It’s been a learning experience since the start, but I have a great coaching staff around me and a tough group of kids.”
