West Michigan Conference wrestling: See which individuals are advancing to 2024 state finals

Whitehall leads the conference with a school-record 11 individual state qualifiers.

MHSAA individual wrestling regionals were held at various locations for boys on Saturday (Feb. 17, 2024), and for girls on Sunday (Feb. 18).

The top four finishers in each weight class at each regional advance to the individual state finals March 1-2 at Ford Field in Detroit.

Below is a roundup of the West Michigan Conference wrestlers who punched their tickets to the finals:

GIRLS WRESTLING

REGIONAL RED 1 AT CADILLAC

Montague girls wrestlers competed in the Regional Red 1 Sunday in Cadillac and fared quite well. The Lady Mat Cats have qualified five wrestlers for the individual state finals March 1-2 at Ford Field.

Montague junior Ava Pelton captured the regional title by pin at 155 pounds. Senior Emma Pendell was runner-up at 145, while seniors Savannah Winkleblack (110) and Trisha Beckman (235) both finished third. Senior Abby Thommen placed fourth at 125.

This will be the fourth trip to the finals for Pendell and Winkleblack. It’ll be the third trip for Pelton, second for Thommen, and first for Beckman.

“Ava is wrestling with a very relaxed, fun attitude that is transpiring into some outstanding performances,” Montague coach Kris Maddox said. “All year, her brackets have been huge and she is battle tested. Abby had a loaded 125-bound bracket and wrestled well but we still feel like she has more inside. I got teared up a bit when she final punched her ticket. She’s been through a lot and continues to push. It’s amazing to see the growth.

“Emma performed as is the standard and competed every match to strive for another podium finish. Savannah lost a tough one early on and had to battle back to push to maintain her all-state status. Trisha was excellent all day long — lost to a girl she beat twice before then came back and beat her in the consolation finals by adapting and being aggressive.

“Overall I think we performed well but we are letting the pressure of this being our last trip with some of them affect our wrestling. We need to return to the reason we wrestle and focus on the fun and our abilities shine.”

Mason County Central junior Nyvaeh Wendt (120) punched her ticket to the state finals for the third straight year by finishing runner-up in the regional at Cadillac.

“This was a really tough bracket,” MCC coach Kendel Trim said. “There were six or seven ranked girls in this weight class and Nyvaeh did a great job to make it through. This is her third trip to Ford Field and we hope to have another successful tournament. Nyveah will join Zane McCabe and Hunter Sanford at the individual finals in two weeks.”

DIVISION 3 AT HOWARD CITY TRI COUNTY

Whitehall set a school record with 11 wrestlers advancing from the regional to the state finals. The Vikings went 8-2 in the blood round, which is a match to compete for third place. If a wrestler loses in the blood round, then his season is over.

Three wrestlers from Orchard View and two from Montague advanced to the state finals.

Whitehall senior Darnell Mack (150 pounds) and junior Gavin Craner (175) both captured regional titles.

“The consolation semifinal is a pressure cook,” Whitehall coach Justin Zeerip said. “Last year was a disaster. I think we might have watched our guys lose five or six in a row. It was awful for our guys.

“I feel really bad for (Blake) English and (Caden) Varela. They both wrestled well enough to win, and they are not done. They’ll help come back and fight for their brothers  at team state.  Our guys put a ton of time in, so it’s an incredible feeling to see them make it to Ford Field.”

Zeerip was named regional coach of the year, while Craig Christensen earned the regional assistant coach of the year award.

In a special moment, Whitehall senior 138-pounder Ryne Christensen decisioned Birch Run’s Aiden Tomberg, 7-6, in the blood round and leapt into father Craig Christensen’s arms for an emotional embrace. It’s Ryne Christensen’s first berth in the individual state finals.

“I was so happy. I’ve always wanted to be one of ‘those guys’ who went to state and got a medal. I’ve always wanted my name on our wall,” Ryne Christensen said. “Last year, I lost in the blood round and I was devastated.

“It’s so much different wrestling there as a senior. Much more intense. I actually felt bad for the kid I beat He’s done. His career is over. I saw him next to the bleachers like 10 minutes later, and he was still crying with his coach. That part is really tough.”

DIVISION 3 REGIONAL AT KALKASKA

Hart led the West Michigan Conference at this regional with five state finals qualifiers, including regional champions in junior Alex Hicks (175) and freshman Kole Thomas (113).

Shelby senior Nick Cano (106) and Mason County Central junior Hunter Sanford (120) captured regional titles. One more wrestler from Shelby and Mason County Central each advanced to the state finals as well.

“I thought we wrestled well, but just had a couple of tough losses,” Hart coach Rocky Smith said. “Alex Hicks won a weight class that had six ranked wrestlers and wrestled great all day. Freshman Kole Thomas also had a big day by winning the regional and pinning all three opponents. I was also recognized as regional coach of the year.”

Said Mason County Central coach Kendel Trim: “Hunter is on a roll right now.  So far in the postseason tournament, he has six first-period pins. He is just smashing everybody right now. He has really found his groove.  He says he feels great and is having fun and that is fairly apparent.”

For Hart, Ivan Lara picked up his 100th career win.
