West Michigan senior makes triumphant return to football field amid leukemia battle

Ravenna’s Keigen Swan was back on the field Friday, Sept. 30, 2022, about 11 months after his original diagnosis.

RAVENNA — For several months, Keigen Swan has tackled leukemia head on.

It kept the Ravenna High School senior away from the football field, his happy place. But that officially changed Friday night during the Bulldogs’ homecoming game at Citizens’ Field.

With about 6 1/2 minutes left in the second quarter, Keigen made his triumphant return in Ravenna’s 62-30 victory over Hesperia. His big moment was announced by the public-address announcer as he trotted onto the field and he was greeted by teammates with high-fives and pats on his helmet. Keigen also served as a team captain that night.

The soft-spoken lineman is fighting B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), a cancer of the blood. His mother, Jennifer Miller, said he is doing well and has a couple years of treatment remaining.

Prior to Friday’s game, the last time he stepped foot on the field was Ravenna’s 7-6 playoff-opening win over North Muskegon on Oct. 29, 2021, at Citizens’ Field.

This Friday (Oct. 7), Ravenna travels to North Muskegon the North Grove Brewers West Michigan Conference Game of the Week pitting teams that are both 5-1 overall and unbeaten in the WMC Rivers Division.

CatchMark SportsNet will produce a free livestream as part of our comprehensive coverage of the contest. The game will kick off at 7 p.m. with the pregame show at 6:30 p.m. on the CatchMark SportsNet YouTube channel.
