WHITEHALL — Holding the West Michigan Invitational Track Meet record in pole vault and carrying a weighted GPA well over 4.0, the sky is apparently the limit for David Conrad.

The Whitehall High School senior is aiming very high.

Conrad is taking his talents to Division II power Grand Valley State University. On Wednesday, he joined three of his Whitehall classmates during a signing-day ceremony.

Conrad said he was considering Michigan State, the Naval Academy and a few other Division I schools, but GVSU was the best fit for him. Sporting a weighted GPA of 4.244, he intends on studying education in college with a goal of becoming a high school teacher and coach.

The bar is set high for Conrad in pole vault, most certainly. Last spring, he broke the record in the 43rd West Michigan Invitational with an effort of 15 feet, 7 inches. His indoor best is 15-6.

Conrad placed fourth at the MHSAA’s Division 2 state finals last spring with a mark of 14-1.

At GVSU, Conrad is setting his sights on becoming a D-II All-American.
