Whitehall, Strong Defensive Showing Propels them to a District Title

Whitehall makes statement on the road against Big Rapids.

Big Rapids – A year removed from an unbelievable district loss that shocked the state of Michigan, Whitehall avenges its loss against Big Rapids.

Once the clock hit zero, Whitehall and its faithful stormed the field. After a devastating loss a season ago, coach Tony Sigmon and his guys rallied the past two games and now get to hoist the district wooden mitten.

The Vikings held the ball for over 26 minutes compared to 21 for Big Rapids. The Cardinals found themselves in a hole late that prevented them from getting back into the game.

Freshman Judd Musk started the scoring with a field goal towards the back end of the first quarter. It was a 28-yarder and the first of his career.

The score heading into halftime was 3-0, which was certainly not expected, as both teams presented explosive offenses during the regular season.

Hunter Osborne owned Big Rapids in the second half. Osborne caught one pass for a touchdown and another on the ground. The first one, coming on Whitehall’s second drive of the second half, Osborne caught it at the seven, then made two jukes and ran into the end zone.

The Vikings, with just over three minutes left to play, led 17-0.

The deficit was just too much, and with not enough clock left, it resulted in Whitehall’s somewhat emotional victory.

Senior Nate Betz fumbled late in the second quarter but was able to keep his composure and played a key role in the win. “I knew I couldn’t let it affect me or my team.” Betz also said, “It felt good to get some revenge from last year, and we’re going to be ready for South Christian next week.”

Whitehall hosts South Christian next Friday with a regional championship on the line.
