Whitehall volleyball edges Shelby in 5 sets to stay unbeaten in conference play

Whitehall’s volleyball team came up with a big victory Tuesday evening as the Vikings squeaked out a highly competitive five-set victory over host Shelby in West Michigan Conference play.

The Vikings (18-2 overall, 5-0 WMC), who are ranked No. 10 in the Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association Division 2 poll, defeated the Tigers, 13-25, 25-18, 25-21, 23-25, 15-8.

“Really tough match tonight,” Whitehall coach Ted Edsall said. “Great play by our four seniors and contributions from our young players was needed to pull out the victory.”

The Vikings were led in kills by Charley Klint (14), Rayne Thompson (eight) and Sidney Shepherd (six). Maggie Evans notched 34 assists on the night.

Whitehall’s next conference match will be Tuesday, Sept. 28, at home against North Muskegon. The Norse also are conference-title contenders.
