Montague’s volleyball team had to work for it, but the Wildcats kept within striking distance of the lead in the West Michigan Conference standings with a victory Tuesday night at Oakridge.

Montague defeated Oakridge, 25-20, 25-23, 27-25.

The Wildcats (7-20, 4-1 WMC) are in second place in the conference. Whitehall and North Muskegon are both unbeaten in the league to lead the way.

“For us, this is a big win, plus not dropping any sets, puts us in the driver’s seat,” Montague coach Shawn Bectel said. “If we win out, it puts us in a tie for first.”

After early leads slipped away in the second and third sets, Montague battled back each time.

Anastasia Trevino and Britta Johnson led the Wildcats with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Jaelyn Sundberg added 31 assists for Montague. Peyton Johnson (25 digs) and Morgan Netcott (21 digs) paced the Wildcats defense.

“The girls played solid defense in the third game. Our freshman setter, Jaelyn Sundberg, dumped on them late, then Anastasia Trevino caught them off-guard and dropped one behind the block to end it.”

Montague takes on Mason County Central in conference action next Tuesday, followed by Whitehall the following Tuesday (Oct. 5).
