Whitehall’s Camden Thompson Has Jersey Retired, Cements Legacy as One of Area’s Best

Whitehall’s leader all season long…

Camden Thompson—a name that’s been the face of Whitehall Athletics—had his jersey officially retired Tuesday night before the Vikings’ matchup against Manistee.

Let’s be real: it was only a matter of time.

Thompson has cemented himself as one of the greatest athletes in Whitehall history, joining an elite group of Viking GOATs like Nate McLouth and Dawn Baker (who, by the way, racked up a ridiculous 1,673 career points). But #23? He’s been on another level. This season alone, he’s led the league in just about every major statistical category at some point, averaging an absurd 24.2 points, 14.2 rebounds, and 6 assists per game.

Here’s the thing—Camden Thompson isn’t just a basketball player. That’s his bread and butter, sure, but he’s also a problem on the football field and an absolute force in track and field.

  • Football? Four straight district final appearances. Played three years at WR before switching to QB this season.
  • Track? High jump specialist with crazy athleticism, plus he competes in the 60m hurdles, 110m hurdles, shot put, and discus.

If you’ve seen him play, you know. The guy defies gravity on a regular basis, and Whitehall fans have been getting those highlight-reel moments free of charge for years.

Typically, jersey retirements happen after a player has been gone for a while—think Kobe, who retired in 2016 and had both his Lakers jerseys hanging in the rafters by 2017. Whitehall didn’t want to wait. Head Coach Christian Subdon saying,

“We just want to tell him that we love him… we don’t want to wait to give him the recognition that he deserves.”

Then, it was Cam’s turn to speak. He kept it real, giving major credit to his parents—especially his mom, Annette, who’s CatchMark SportsNet Facebook Top Fan.

“Thank you to my Mom, who has… pushed me and made me better…”

As a coach in the area, I have to say—congrats, Cam. You’ve been a nightmare matchup in the WMC for years, and I know plenty of coaches (myself included) are relieved that we finally don’t have to ask, “How the heck are we supposed to stop Camden Thompson?”

Next stop? Western Michigan University, where he’ll be suiting up for both the Broncos’ football and basketball teams.
