WMC boys basketball: Ravenna stays on top; Shelby, North Muskegon pull out thrillers

The CatchMark SportsNet Game of the Week lived up to its billing Friday night, as Ravenna edged host Montague, 52-46, in a competitive boys basketball clash.

That’s two big road wins this week for the Bulldogs (7-3), who at the midway point of the season are sitting in a nice position — alone atop the West Michigan Conference standings at 6-1. On Tuesday, the ‘Dogs earned a 57-48 victory at Shelby, which knocked off Whitehall on Friday.

Montague slips to 4-4 overall and 3-4 in the conference.

SHELBY 55, WHITEHALL 54: At Shelby, the host Tigers pulled out this thriller as Whitehall had a chance to win on a last-second shot. Shelby lead 21-14 at the half and hung on for the big win.

NORTH MUSKEGON 58, MASON COUNTY CENTRAL 56 (OT): At North Muskegon, the host Norsemen jumped out to a 28-17 lead at the half, but Mason County Central battled back in this dramatic matchup. The Spartans had a chance to win it at the end of regulation, and tie it at the end of overtime, but could not convert. North Muskegon’s Brandon Rypstra hit a 3-pointer, followed by Troy McManus’ two free throws, to push the Norse over the top in OT.

OAKRIDGE 69, HART 44: At Oakridge, the host Eagles jumped on Hart 23-9 in the first quarter and rode that wave to a runaway league victory. Oakridge led 40-24 at halftime.
