WHITEHALL — The time has come again. Time for neighboring rivals to meet on the football field and battle for the right to keep “The Bell.”
It’s “Battle for the Bell” week. At 7 p.m. Friday, Montague will visit Whitehall in a showdown of state-ranked teams. They’ll compete for the traveling trophy and accompanying bragging rights in a game carrying West Michigan Conference title implications.
The Division 6 fifth-ranked Wildcats (6-1 overall) bring a 5-0 league record into the grudge match. The ‘Cats have already earned a share of the conference title and they’ve kept “The Bell” for six straight years.
Meanwhile, the Division 4 fourth-ranked Vikings (6-1) enter with a 4-1 league record and they’ll nab a piece of the WMC championship with a victory. The Vikes are trying to make sure “The Bell” stays on their side of the bridge.
The bitter rivalry between Montague and Whitehall goes back a century, having started in 1921. The Wildcats lead the all-time series, 64-48-2.
