CEDAR SPRINGS, MI – The Fremont boys soccer team’s dream season came to a heartbreaking close Wednesday night, but not before etching its name into school history.
The Packers’ undefeated run and historic postseason journey ended with a narrow 2-1 loss to South Haven in the Division 3 state semifinals at Cedar Springs High School — marking the first time Fremont has ever reached this stage in program history.
Fremont’s resilience and teamwork carried them through an incredible 21-1-2 season, including the school’s first-ever regional championship and titles in both the WMC and district tournaments.
The matchup against South Haven was tightly contested from the opening whistle. Both teams battled through early nerves and pressure, with Fremont’s defense — anchored by senior goalkeeper Caleb Vissia — holding firm to keep the first half scoreless.
Early in the second half, a tough penalty call went against Fremont inside the box. South Haven’s Baylen Wilson capitalized, firing home the penalty kick to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.
The Packers didn’t waver. With 27 minutes remaining, Javon Basso found himself in space after a long pass and ripped a stunning 25-yard shot into the back of the net to even the score at 1-1.
As both sides pushed for a winner, South Haven’s Levi De La Rosa broke through Fremont’s defense with just under three minutes left, sending a right-footed strike off the crossbar and in — the decisive goal in a 2-1 thriller.
Though the final result wasn’t what the Packers hoped for, their accomplishments this season tell a story of grit, growth, and glory.
Fremont’s postseason run began with a dominant regional performance in Clare, where the Packers defeated Manistee 4-1 behind standout efforts from Deagan Klimek, Adam Kalika, and Garrett Hulst. Klimek scored twice in that game, including his 100th career goal, a milestone that underscored his remarkable high school career.
Led by head coach Steve Vissia, Fremont’s senior class — including Avery Burns, Vissia, Klimek, Hudson Wiersema, Jax Frost, Karston Falbe, Joe Welsh, Remington Faulkner, Cam Witteveen, and Kalika — guided the Packers to unprecedented heights and inspired a community that rallied behind them every step of the way.
Fremont’s 2025 season will be remembered not just for the wins, but for the heart and history made along the way. From thrilling comebacks to record-breaking milestones, this group of Packers proved that hard work and belief can take a team — and a town — further than ever before.
Final Record: 21-1-2
Accomplishments: WMC Champions, District Champions, First-Ever Regional Champions, State Semifinalists.
