Girls Soccer Recap: Western Michigan Christian Opens Season with 4-1 Win Over Ludington

Spring has been slow to arrive in West Michigan. With recent snow still fresh in everyone’s mind, sports like baseball and softball are still waiting for their true season debut. But soccer does not wait for perfect weather. On a cool, mostly cloudy night in Muskegon, West Michigan Christian pushed through the lingering feel of winter and opened its season in convincing fashion, and behind a fast start and a big offensive night, the Warriors gave fans plenty to be excited about in a 4-1 win over Ludington.

West Michigan Christian struck first when Mia Oppenhuizen found the back of the net to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. Sophia DeJonge added to the advantage with a penalty kick, pushing WMC ahead 2-0 with 36 minutes remaining. DeJonge later scored her second goal of the night to extend the lead to 3-0, and Emerysn Paling added a fourth goal to cap the Warriors’ scoring.

Ludington battled through difficult circumstances against a tough Division 4 state contender. The Orioles were without two starters due to injury and played much of the second half down a player after a red card for a hand ball in the box. Despite that, Ludington continued to compete and broke through late when Hestyn Stowe scored the Orioles’ lone goal.

In the end, West Michigan Christian came away with a convincing 4-1 win to begin the spring season, while Ludington showed toughness and resilience against one of the area’s top teams.
