A cold, gray April afternoon provided the backdrop for a full slate of local baseball on Wednesday, with brisk temperatures and early-season wind making every inning feel a little tougher. But while the weather kept things raw, the action across the area was anything but quiet.
From Spring Lake’s shutout sweep of Grant to Oakridge’s offensive outburst against Newaygo, there were strong performances all around. Still, the biggest story of the day came from Whitehall, where North Muskegon turned in a commanding doubleheader sweep behind a historic showing on the mound and timely hitting in game two.
North Muskegon Sweeps Whitehall Behind Slimko’s Dominance and Timely Bats
North Muskegon made the loudest statement of the day in the opener, rolling past Whitehall 5-0 behind an overpowering effort from Logan Slimko.
Slimko was in complete command from the start, striking out 16 batters in six innings of no-hit baseball. He did not allow a run and worked around three walks, never letting Whitehall find any rhythm at the plate. It was the kind of outing that changed the entire tone of the day, as the Norsemen played crisp defense behind him and took advantage of their scoring chances early.
North Muskegon broke through in the second inning when Jonas Slimko brought home two runs, giving the Norsemen an early cushion. They added another run in the third after a Whitehall error, then continued to build enough separation to put the game out of reach. Kylan Nielsen drove in two runs to lead the offense, while Owen Silvis, Oliver Fricke, Nielsen, Jonas Slimko, and Logan Slimko each finished with a hit.
If game one belonged to Logan Slimko, game two showed North Muskegon could win a different kind of game as well.
The Norsemen completed the sweep with a 4-3 win in a tighter, more competitive second matchup. Tyler Frees helped North Muskegon strike first with an RBI single in the second inning, but Whitehall answered in the bottom half to tie the game. The teams traded runs again in the third, with Logan Slimko helping push North Muskegon back in front before Whitehall responded to even things at 2-2.
The decisive moment came in the fourth inning when Kylan Nielsen delivered a two-run single to put the Norsemen ahead 4-2. That hit proved to be the difference.
North Muskegon collected 10 hits in the nightcap, with Bronson Hurst, Tyler Frees, and Jonas Slimko each recording two. The Norsemen also stayed aggressive on the bases, stealing four bags and putting pressure on Whitehall throughout the game.
Whitehall stayed within striking distance and showed plenty of fight. The Vikings scored three runs, drew six walks, stole four bases, and played clean defense without committing an error. Their lineup got a boost from the lower half, with the No. 8 hitter collecting two hits in three at-bats, while two different players drove in runs. But despite that effort, they could not come up with the timely hit needed to erase North Muskegon’s late advantage.
Hunter Darga started for North Muskegon in game two and allowed two runs over three innings while striking out four. Bronson Hurst came on in relief and helped close things out to secure the sweep.
Between Slimko’s electric no-hit performance in game one and North Muskegon’s balanced offensive attack in game two, the Norsemen turned a chilly afternoon into a memorable rivalry sweep.
