Hart Outlasts Shelby in Rivalry Clash as Area Teams Roll in Big Night of Soccer

Hart vs. Shelby 4-2

A tightly contested rivalry matchup lived up to expectations Wednesday night, as Hart maintained its grip on the Oceana County rivalry with a 4-2 win over Shelby, one that was closer than the final score indicates and carries major weight in the West Michigan Conference standings.

With the win, Hart improves to 5-1 in conference play, staying firmly in the title hunt, while Shelby falls to 4-3-1 but remains in the middle of a tightly packed and competitive field.

Hart wasted no time setting the tone. Sophomore Addie Barefoot opened the scoring early, finishing a through ball from Olivia Bradley on a set piece to give the Pirates the early edge. Hart continued to apply pressure, but Shelby’s defense held strong, limiting high-danger chances and keeping the deficit at just one goal.

As the first half progressed, Shelby began to settle in and generate opportunities. A promising through ball nearly produced the equalizer before an unlucky bounce halted the chance. Moments later, the Tigers capitalized on a set piece. Chelly Peterson delivered a dangerous ball into the box, and Fernanda Espinosa finished in the scramble to level the match at 1-1.

Hart answered in the closing moments of the half. Natalie Rosema broke down the defense and sent a pass across the goalmouth, where Zoily Sarabia finished to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.

Out of the break, Hart made key adjustments to counter Shelby’s attack and take control of possession and it showed. The Pirates dictated the pace of play in the second half, creating space and consistently putting pressure on the Shelby defense.

That control quickly turned into goals. Rilynn Porter weaved through defenders and set up Sarabia for her second goal of the night, extending the lead. Not long after, Barefoot returned the favor, finding Porter across the box, and Porter buried a left-footed shot into the top corner to make it 4-1.

Shelby continued to fight. Kylie Brown delivered a strong pass to Annie Stark, who finished to cut the deficit to 4-2. The Tigers created additional chances late, including solid looks from Stark and Brixtyn Friedman, but couldn’t close the gap.

Hart’s ability to control the second half and generate consistent offensive pressure proved to be the difference in a game with clear conference implications. Shelby goalkeeper Brylee Friedman turned in an outstanding effort with 15 saves to keep her team within reach throughout the night.

With the race tightening, Hart’s win keeps them right near the top of the standings, while Shelby remains within striking distance as the conference battle intensifies down the stretch.
