Shelby, Ravenna Split Thriller as WMC Rivers Title Race Reaches Fever Pitch

The West Michigan Conference Rivers Division championship race tightened even further Friday night as Shelby and Ravenna split a dramatic doubleheader in front of a packed crowd that also celebrated one of the area’s legendary coaches.

Shelby captured the opener 8-4 before Ravenna answered with a tense 1-0 victory in Game 2, leaving Shelby, Ravenna, and North Muskegon all in position to potentially share the conference title if each team finishes strong down the stretch.

But the night became about much more than baseball.

Between games, Shelby honored longtime head coach Brian Wright, who is finishing his 45th and final season leading the Tigers program. Hundreds of former players, community members, and supporters gathered for an emotional ceremony recognizing one of West Michigan’s most respected baseball figures.

The moment clearly resonated with Wright, whose career has impacted generations of Shelby baseball players.

On the field, the Tigers struck first in Game 1 behind a strong offensive performance and timely pitching.

Shelby built an early lead and held off the Bulldogs for an 8-4 victory, putting pressure squarely on Ravenna heading into the nightcap.

Ravenna responded exactly the way a championship contender should.

The Bulldogs leaned on dominant pitching and clutch defense in the second game, edging Shelby 1-0 in a tightly contested pitchers’ duel to salvage the split and keep themselves tied atop the conference standings.

The night also featured a historic moment for Ravenna ace Dylan May, who became the first player in school history to reach 300 career strikeouts. May broke Keith Crowley’s long-standing school record of 295 strikeouts earlier in the game, adding another milestone to an already memorable evening.

With the split, the Rivers Division title picture remains completely up for grabs entering the final stretch of conference play.
