Ludington Stays Perfect in WMC Play; Hart Rallies Past Montague in Thriller

Friday night’s featured West Michigan Conference matchup carried major conference title implications as Ludington hosted Fremont in a battle between two of the league’s top programs. Entering the night, Fremont was one of the few teams still within striking distance of the Orioles in the conference standings, making the contest a pivotal opportunity to establish control at the top of the WMC race.

Ludington answered emphatically. With the dominant 5-0 victory, the Orioles not only remained unbeaten in conference play, but also created valuable separation atop the standings heading into the final stretch of the regular season. The win pushed Ludington to 8-0 in conference, while Fremont fell to 5-1-1, giving the Orioles a firm grip on the conference title race with only a handful of league matches remaining.

Ludington 5, Fremont 0

In a game broadcast live on the Oriole Sports Network, Ludington delivered another statement performance behind a huge offensive night from Hestyn Stowe, who recorded a hat trick along with an assist. Grace Forfinski added a goal and an assist, while Claire Keith contributed one goal and one assist. Eloise Kwietniewski also picked up an assist in the victory.

The Orioles wasted little time taking control, erupting for four first-half goals and never allowing Fremont to settle into the match.

Cambria Britton earned the shutout in goal, stopping all three Fremont shots on target. Ludington finished with 12 shots on goal overall.

Defensively, the Orioles were just as impressive. The back line of Norah Kiessel, Alex Bousson, Kaia Jones, Leeahna Veeneman, and Delaney Jeruzal turned away nearly every Fremont attack and limited one of the conference’s strongest offensive teams to very few dangerous opportunities.

The victory now sets up another massive conference showdown Monday night when second-place Hart travels to Oriole Field. Hart remains the only team within immediate reach of Ludington in the standings with just one conference loss.

Hart 3, Montague 2

The secondary feature game of the night produced one of the most competitive contests of the conference season as Hart rallied from a halftime deficit to edge Montague 3-2 on the road.

The Pirates struck first on one of their signature corner kick plays with 24:14 remaining in the opening half. Junior Rilynn Porter sent a high cross to the back post where sophomore Vivi VanAgtmael volleyed home a left-footed finish for the early 1-0 lead.

Montague responded quickly, equalizing off a run down the left flank before taking a 2-1 advantage later in the half after capitalizing on a short clearance.

The Wildcats played an outstanding first half, using disciplined possession and strong attacking pressure to put Hart on its heels. However, the toll of a demanding late-season schedule began to show in the second half as the Pirates slowly gained momentum.

Hart adjusted well after halftime and eventually found the equalizer when VanAgtmael slipped sophomore Addie Barefoot behind the defense. Barefoot curled a shot into the back post to tie the game at 2-2 with 22 minutes remaining.

Later in the half, Barefoot earned a free kick near midfield and delivered a dangerous cross to the back post where Porter tapped home the eventual game-winner.

Goalkeeper Baleigh Klotz finished with seven saves for Hart, including a critical late tip on a cross to preserve the victory. Defenders Nevaeh Reyna, Ari Vela-Cantù, and Olivia Bradley anchored a strong second-half defensive effort for the Pirates.
