North Muskegon kept pressure on conference-leading Ludington Wednesday night, defeating Shelby 4-0 on Senior Night behind a hat trick from Delaney Young.
While the final score showed a comfortable Norse victory, Shelby proved to be a much tougher challenge than the scoreboard indicated. The Tigers frustrated North Muskegon throughout the opening half with a determined defensive effort led by Ari Garza, Charlee Friedman, Sydney Reed, and Ava Lamberg. Goalkeeper Brylee Friedman turned in one of her strongest performances of the season, recording 20 saves.
North Muskegon finally broke through early in the second half after a dangerous cross and fortunate bounce led to the opening goal. The Norse added another goal minutes later before eventually pulling away late.
Emmy Creed added the fourth goal for North Muskegon, while Alex Johnson, Emma Buchmiller, and Creed each collected assists. Izzy McFarren secured the shutout with three saves.
The victory keeps North Muskegon firmly in second place in the West Michigan Conference standings at 7-1 in league play, trailing only unbeaten Ludington as postseason play quickly approaches.
