The Western Michigan Christian girls soccer team has spent the entire season proving it can overcome adversity, and that resilience was on full display Friday night.
Trailing rival North Muskegon 1-0 late in the Division 4 district championship game, the Warriors never panicked. Instead, a pair of underclassmen delivered the biggest moments of the season as Western Michigan Christian rallied for a 2-1 victory and its second consecutive district championship.
North Muskegon controlled much of the first half and broke through with 17:40 remaining before halftime when Marissa Zonnebelt finished a scoring opportunity off a corner kick to give the Norse a 1-0 advantage. The goal rewarded a strong opening half for North Muskegon, which consistently pressured the Warriors and carried the lead into the break.
Western Michigan Christian continued to battle in the second half despite trailing. The Warriors gradually created more opportunities and finally found the breakthrough with 17 minutes remaining in regulation.
Freshman Sophia DeJonge delivered the equalizer after receiving a pass from Emersyn Paling and finding space behind the North Muskegon defense. Seeing an opportunity, DeJonge fired a shot that found the back of the net, tying the game at 1-1 and igniting the home crowd.
The momentum swing proved decisive. Just a few minutes later, with 13:30 remaining, DeJonge once again created a dangerous chance by attacking down the sideline and sending a shot toward goal. North Muskegon goalkeeper Izzy McFarren made the initial stop, but the rebound bounced directly to sophomore Lainey Postema, who raced to the loose ball and buried the game-winning goal for a 2-1 advantage.
The Warriors’ defense handled the remaining pressure from North Muskegon and secured the victory as the final whistle touched off a championship celebration on the home field.
The comeback showcased the growth of a young Western Michigan Christian squad that features 14 underclassmen and just three seniors. DeJonge’s performance was particularly significant after battling through an early-season injury that temporarily slowed her development during her freshman campaign. Her two critical plays arrived at exactly the right moment for a team that has steadily improved throughout the season.
Western Michigan Christian’s ability to remain composed was forged through one of the area’s most demanding schedules. The Warriors faced a challenging slate that included Grand Haven, Spring Lake, Holland Christian, Ludington, Fremont, Cedar Springs, Allendale, NorthPointe Christian, Grand Rapids West Catholic and Hudsonville Unity Christian. Those experiences helped prepare the Warriors for the pressure-packed moments they faced Friday night.
The victory also highlighted how far the program has come despite replacing five starters, including three team captains, from last year’s district championship squad. Early-season growing pains have given way to a confident team that appears to be peaking at the right time.
North Muskegon finished a strong season with a 15-6 record. The Norse carried the play for long stretches and appeared poised to capture the district title before Western Michigan Christian’s late surge. The loss brings an end to the careers of nine seniors who helped maintain the program’s status as one of Division 4’s most respected teams.
Western Michigan Christian improves to 9-7-2 and advances to Tuesday’s Division 4 regional semifinal against defending state champion Kalamazoo Christian at Fennville High School. The matchup will be a rematch of last season’s regional semifinal, won 1-0 by Kalamazoo Christian on its way to a state championship.

Fremont Cruises Past Hart for Division 3 District Championship
Fremont wasted little time taking control in Friday’s Division 3 district championship, defeating Hart 7-0 to advance to regional play.

The Packers struck quickly behind Esther Vissia, who scored twice in the opening 15 minutes off assists from Maddie Matter. Makenna Scott added another goal before halftime as Fremont built a commanding 3-0 lead.
Matter led the second-half offensive explosion with a hat trick while Vissia completed her three-goal night with another tally. Fremont controlled possession throughout the contest and outshot Hart 21-6.
Goalkeeper Hallie Snyder recorded six saves for the shutout while a strong defensive effort limited Hart’s scoring chances throughout the evening.
Hart concluded an impressive season with a 14-6-1 record after reaching the district championship game.
Fremont improves to 13-7-2 and advances to Tuesday’s regional semifinal in Clare.

Reeths-Puffer Wins Shootout Thriller for First District Title Since 2014
Reeths-Puffer captured its first girls soccer district championship since 2014 in dramatic fashion Friday night, defeating Cedar Springs 2-1 in a penalty-kick shootout after regulation and overtime ended tied at 1-1.
The Rockets grabbed an early advantage when Sara Carlson lofted a high shot that floated over the goalkeeper and into the net for a 1-0 lead.
Cedar Springs answered in the second half when Ella Peck scored on a long free kick that found its way through traffic and into the goal, evening the match at 1-1.
Neither team could find a winner through two overtime periods, sending the district championship to penalty kicks.
Reeths-Puffer converted its first four attempts, but the defining moment came from freshman goalkeeper Ava Callender. After Cedar Springs scored on its first three shootout attempts, Callender made a diving save to her right on the fourth attempt, giving the Rockets a crucial advantage.
Senior Mallorie Messer followed moments later by converting the decisive penalty kick, securing the shootout victory and setting off a celebration for the Rockets.
The championship marks a major milestone for the Reeths-Puffer program and sends the Rockets into regional play with a 12-7-1 record. They will continue their postseason run Tuesday at Mount Pleasant High School.
