Some stadiums are remembered because of the championships won inside them. Others become landmarks because they serve as the heart of a community.
For generations, Hart High School’s football stadium has been exactly that, a gathering place where Friday night lights have brought together families, alumni, students and generations of Pirate fans. It has witnessed rebuilding seasons, milestone victories and one of the most remarkable turnarounds in school history.
Now, as Hart prepares for the largest athletic facility renovation in decades, we take a look at the history of the stadium before it enters a new era.
A Community Landmark
Today, the home of the Pirates is part of the Richard A. Hodges Athletic Complex, named in honor of longtime educator, school board president and athletic supporter Richard A. Hodges. In May 2026, Hart Public Schools announced the football playing surface itself would become Platt Field, recognizing retiring superintendent Mark Platt for his 13 years of leadership and his role in helping guide the district through a transformational bond project. While the field will carry a new name, the athletic complex will continue to honor Hodges’ decades of service to Hart athletics.
A New Era Begins in 1986
Although football had been played at Hart High School for decades before, the stadium entered a new chapter in 1986 with the completion of a new sports complex.
According to the 1986 Hartian yearbook, the improvements included a new football field, electronic scoreboard, press box, entrance signage and landscaping. The yearbook called it “the most spectacular improvement” to the school that year and highlighted the football team’s first season on the newly completed field.
Nearly four decades later, many of those improvements still define the stadium that has become familiar to generations of Pirate fans.
A Vision Delayed
Hart’s path toward a modern athletic complex wasn’t immediate.
In 2013, voters were asked to consider a roughly $7 million bond proposal that included plans for a synthetic turf football field and other facility upgrades. The proposal was defeated, leaving the stadium largely unchanged while many surrounding schools invested in newer athletic facilities. Although the project didn’t move forward at the time, it planted the seeds for future conversations about upgrading Hart’s athletic facilities.
Friday Nights Return to Life
The stadium has experienced its share of difficult seasons, but the atmosphere around Hart football changed dramatically during the early 2020s.
Under head coach Joe Tanis, the Pirates posted a 6-3 record in 2021, signaling that the program was moving in a new direction and restoring excitement around Friday night football in Hart.
That momentum continued to build over the next two seasons.
History Made in 2023
Few nights in the stadium’s history compare to what happened during the 2023 MHSAA playoffs.
For the first time in school history, Hart qualified for the football playoffs and earned the right to host a postseason game. Nearly 2,000 fans packed the stadium as the Pirates defeated Kent City 44-22 for the program’s first-ever playoff victory.
The win meant far more than advancing to the next round.
It provided the football program with its first postseason trophy—a fitting moment after head coach Joe Tanis had recently organized a new athletic trophy case that featured championships from nearly every Hart sport except football. The Pirates finally added football to that collection, creating one of the most memorable nights the stadium has ever hosted.
Preparing for the Future
Soon, construction equipment will replace football cleats.
Following voter approval of Hart Public Schools’ bond proposal, the athletic complex is scheduled for one of the most significant renovations in its history. The project includes reconstruction of the football field and track along with broader improvements to the athletic complex. Tree removal around the high school began in 2026 as part of the site’s preparation, with construction on the athletic complex scheduled to begin following the football season.
The next time fans gather here, they’ll begin seeing the first signs of a transformed stadium that will serve Hart athletes for generations to come.
More Than a Stadium
Facilities change. Scoreboards are replaced. Press boxes are renovated. Fields receive new names.
But what makes Hart’s football stadium special has never been its concrete, grandstands or light poles.
It’s the people who fill them every Friday night. As Platt Field prepares to welcome a new generation of Pirates, the memories created at the Richard A. Hodges Athletic Complex will continue to connect Hart’s past with its future.
