Hart survives wild finish against Montague in unforgettable district semifinal thriller

Fourteen seconds.

That was all the time remaining when Hart delivered the final blow in one of the most dramatic girls soccer matches West Michigan has seen this postseason. After nearly 80 minutes of momentum swings, comeback goals, penalty kicks, and emotional highs and lows, Hart escaped with a stunning 5-4 victory over Montague in Wednesday’s Division 3 district semifinal.

For the Wildcats, the loss was heartbreaking. For Hart, it was history.

The Pirates not only advanced to Friday’s district championship game at Fremont, but the victory also marked the 50th career win for Hart’s head coach, a milestone that reflected years of steady program growth and recent success, with the majority of those wins coming over the past three seasons.

Montague came out firing early and controlled much of the first half. The Wildcats scored the opening goal with 27:29 remaining in the half, then doubled the lead later to go ahead 2-0.

Hart finally answered with 11:08 left before halftime to cut the deficit to 2-1 heading into the break.

The second half quickly turned chaotic. Hart tied the game at 2-2 with 23 minutes remaining, then struck again just 32 seconds later to grab its first lead of the night at 3-2.

But Montague never stopped responding. With 16:33 remaining, the Wildcats found the equalizer to make it 3-3, setting the stage for a frantic final stretch.

Hart converted a penalty kick with 4:45 left to move ahead 4-3, only to watch Montague answer less than a minute later to tie the match once again at 4-4.

That setup what became the decisive moment. With time nearly expired, Hart earned another penalty kick opportunity and buried the game-winner with just 14 seconds remaining on the clock.

Montague’s goals came from Ellee Smith, Marguerite O’Connell, and Ava Crow, whose free kick goal in the second half energized the Wildcats during their comeback effort. Goalkeeper Sara Zorrilla also came up with a huge penalty kick save earlier in the match to help keep Montague within striking distance.

For both programs, the match was one players, coaches, and fans will remember for a very long time.
