Montague Rolls, Spring Lake Explodes, Fruitport Eyes Redemption in District Play

The road to a district championship is officially underway, and several area teams made loud opening statements in pre-district action Tuesday night. From dominant pitching performances to explosive offensive outbursts, local squads showed they are ready for postseason baseball.

District 73 – Montague, North Muskegon, Shelby, and Western Michigan Christian

Montague 10, Hart 0 (5 innings)

The Montague Wildcats entered the postseason at 23-5 and looked every bit like a championship contender in a dominant 10-0 mercy-rule victory over Hart in five innings. Montague wasted no time jumping on the Pirates early.

  • Eli Petersen sparked the offense with a first-inning single as the Wildcats built a 4-0 lead.
  • By the end of the second inning, Montague had stretched the advantage to 7-0.
  • Levi Auger added another hit in the third inning while Dylan Bailey continued the offensive pressure in the fourth.
  • The knockout blow came on a two-run single from all-conference standout Cole Herremans, pushing the lead to 10-0.

On the mound, the Wildcats were just as dominant. Herremans earned the victory before Eli Pendel slammed the door shut. The Montague pitching staff combined for a no-hitter while striking out Hart hitters throughout the afternoon.

The Wildcats improved to 24-5 overall and now advance to Saturday’s district semifinal against North Muskegon at Shelby Baseball Field. This matchup already has history. The two teams split a doubleheader during the regular season:

  • North Muskegon won the opener 12-5.
  • Montague answered with a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.

North Muskegon enters at 20-11 overall and is capable of strong pitching performances, but consistency has been an issue late in the season. The Norsemen were shut out 5-0 by Sparta in their regular-season finale, managing only three hits while striking out 10 times.

Montague appears to be peaking at the right time. The Wildcats have won 10 of their last 12 games and are getting strong pitching, timely hitting, and elite defense.

Shelby enters with an 18-6 record and plenty of momentum after beating Muskegon Catholic Central 10-3 Tuesday night. DayDay Garcia earned the win on the mound while also leading the offense with a single, a triple, and three runs scored. Neil Gowell added two hits for the Tigers.

Western Michigan Christian comes in at 4-13, but district baseball can always bring surprises. Shelby swept the Warriors earlier this season and will be favored heading into Saturday.

District 38 – Spring Lake, Whitehall, Fruitport, and Orchard View

Spring Lake 16, Oakridge 0 (4 innings)

Spring Lake dominated Oakridge 16-0 in a four-inning mercy-rule win in Division 2 District 38 action Tuesday night. The Lakers set the tone early with six runs in the first inning before adding five more in both the third and fourth innings. Mason Troyer led the offensive explosion with four hits, three runs scored, and three RBI, while Max Feltner added two hits and five RBI. Owen Smies chipped in two hits and Brady Hill delivered a pinch-hit RBI single. On the mound, Maddux Kipling struck out six over three strong innings before Oliver Smies closed out the game with four strikeouts in the fourth. Spring Lake improved to 24-7 overall, while Oakridge finished the season at 10-20.

Spring Lake vs. Whitehall

Whitehall enters district play with a 9-16 record, but the Vikings have battled through a difficult schedule and shown improvement down the stretch. They now face a major challenge against a red-hot Spring Lake squad that features one of the area’s most explosive offenses along with strong pitching depth. The Lakers enter Saturday as favorites, while Whitehall will need a clean defensive performance, a strong outing on the mound, and an early answer to Spring Lake’s aggressive lineup to have a chance at the upset.

Fruitport vs. Orchard View

Fruitport enters district play at 26-6 and looks like one of the strongest contenders in Division 2. The Trojans are led by senior standout Trevor Rusnak, who transformed his game during the offseason by dropping nearly 45 pounds, boosting his batting average to .434, surpassing 100 career hits and RBI, and continuing to serve as one of the team’s top arms on the mound. Fruitport also returns much of the core that reached the regional finals a season ago, giving the Trojans valuable postseason experience heading into another tournament run. Orchard View comes in at 4-16 after a difficult finish to the season, including a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Fremont.

Championship Outlook

District 38 appears to be on a collision course for a marquee championship matchup between Spring Lake and Fruitport. The Lakers enter with a powerful offense, strong pitching depth, and plenty of momentum, while Fruitport brings postseason experience, veteran leadership, and added motivation after falling short in both conference and GMAA competition. A major storyline is the Trojans’ desire for redemption following a 10-0 loss to Spring Lake earlier this season. If both teams advance through the semifinals Saturday, the district final could turn into one of the premier baseball matchups in West Michigan this postseason.

Ludington Eliminated

Ludington’s season ended in a 9-3 Division 2 pre-district loss to Big Rapids. The Orioles finished:

  • 17-12 overall,
  • and co-champions of the West Michigan Conference Lakes Division alongside Montague.

District 76 – Ravenna 2, NorthPointe Christian 0

Ravenna survived a tense Division 3 pre-district game behind a historic pitching performance from Dylan May.

  • struck out 12,
  • allowed only four hits,
  • and became Ravenna’s all-time single-season strikeout leader with 115.

The Bulldogs advance to Saturday’s district semifinal at Covenant Christian.

District 72 – Manistee

Mason County Central’s season came to an end with a loss to Evart in Division 3 District 72 action. Evart now advances to face host Manistee in the district semifinal on Saturday, May 30 at 10 a.m. in Manistee. The other semifinal features Reed City against LeRoy Pine River at noon, with the two winners meeting later that day for the district championship. Manistee enters the postseason as one of the favorites after a strong regular season, while Evart will look to carry momentum from its opening-round victory into Saturday’s matchup.

District 73 – Holton and Hesperia

Holton and Hesperia are also part of the Division 3 District 73 bracket at Shelby Baseball Field. Holton enters the postseason after another strong regular season and will face Hesperia in a district semifinal matchup Saturday. The winner advances to the district championship later that day against either Montague, North Muskegon, Shelby, or Western Michigan Christian depending on the bracket alignment. Holton’s experience and pitching depth could make the Red Devils a dangerous postseason team, while Hesperia will look to play spoiler and extend its season with an upset victory.

District 3 – Mona Shores and Reeths Puffer

Mona Shores opens Division 1 District 3 play on Saturday at Reeths-Puffer High School with a semifinal matchup against Rockford at 10 a.m. The other semifinal features host Reeths-Puffer against Greenville at noon, with the two winners advancing to the district championship later that afternoon.

The Sailors enter the postseason after a strong regular season that included key wins over Reeths-Puffer and North Muskegon, along with a competitive schedule in the O-K Green. Mona Shores closed the regular season with a narrow 1-0 loss to Grandville but continues to rely on strong pitching depth and solid defense heading into districts.

Rockford presents a tough opening-round challenge, but Mona Shores has shown the ability to compete with strong Division 1 opponents throughout the spring. If the Sailors advance, a potential district final against Reeths-Puffer could set up a rematch between the lakeshore rivals.
