WHITEHALL, MI – The Vikings came into the night with a 19-game home winning streak. The streak was snapped by an ambush from a sneaky Allendale squad, 64-58.
The Falcons made just five three-point shots, with most of their points coming inside the paint on Monday night.
“We need to rebound better; we have to be better in transition.” Said Whitehall coach Christian Subdon.
Whitehall’s Brock Morningstar had nine points in the first nine minutes and got the Vikings off to a hot start. The Vikings went cold from the floor down the stretch, scoring only six points on shots from the field in the fourth quarter.
“We didn’t hit shots; they turned up the defense, and we turned the ball over too much,” said Subdon.
Hunter Osborne nailed a three-pointer from the corner to start the game and a very back-and-forth first quarter. Jacob Devito would soon after hit a heat-check triple for Allendale. Morningstar notched six points in the quarter and gave Whitehall the lead, 13-12, after the first.
Allendale forward Alex Genuise scored 10 of his 24 total points in quarter number two, while Camden Thompson was the Vikings’ big scorer with six points, including a long 25-footer midway through the second quarter.
Senior guard Finn Muller drew baseline with five seconds left in the half and landed a layup that would give the Vikings a 29-27 lead heading into the locker room.
The third quarter was similar to the first and second, with Whitehall extending its lead by one point each time. Genuise and Thompson went bucket-for-bucket yet again. Thompson finished with seven points, while Genuise came away with eight for their respective squads.
With the Vikings holding a two-point lead with just over three minutes to play in the game, Hudson Kragt landed a clutch and-one that not only gave Allendale the momentum but also gave them the lead.
Whitehall would fight offensively to keep the game close, but two threes in 50 seconds by Devito would give the Falcons the edge to take down the Vikings on their court.
Outside of the big 24-point fourth quarter from Allendale, Whitehall showed a much-improved defensive effort since last Friday’s win over Oakridge.
“We still held a really good team down in scoring. They hit a lot of free throws down the stretch. For the most part, we played better defensively; there were just two or three stretches where we didn’t,” said Subdon.
Thompson finished with 26 points, followed by Morningstar and Corde Anderson, who each added 12.
Genuise ended with 24, while Devito had 17 points for the Falcons.
Whitehall (15-4, 9-0) will host Manistee on Tuesday and will retire Thompson’s number 23 before the game.
Allendale (14-5, 7-2) now sets its sights on Friday as they host Kenowa Hills on senior night.
