Baseball Area Recap April 14th: Manistee and MCC Split Monday Doubleheaders

Pitching, timely hits help Manistee and MCC salvage splits

It was a relatively quiet Monday for baseball around the area, with just two of our coverage teams taking the field. Manistee split its doubleheader against Evart, 9-1 loss and a 7-2 win, while Mason County Central dropped the first of two games, 5-2, then came away with the nightcap win, 12-3.

Evart 9, Manistee 1 – GM1

The Mariners were only able to pick up two hits in the first game and struck out 14 times through the lineup. Eli Workman got the start but only pitched two outs before he was relieved by Luke Olson. Through three innings of work, Olson gave up just three hits but allowed three runs, resulting in his first loss of the season as the Mariners’ offense scored only one run. The run was scored off of a passed ball and would allow Mariner Ray Maycock to get Manistee on the board. The game was tied at one apiece heading into the fourth inning, but after three singles and a double, the Mariners found themselves trailing by five. Evart poured on its other three runs in the sixth and proved to be too much, too late for Manistee to mount any sort of comeback.

Manistee 7, Evart 2 – GM2

In game two of the two-game set, Manistee was able to notch its first win of the season, 7-2. Workman led the charge offensively with a 2-3 day at the plate, as well as driving in one RBI. Landin Sowa earned the win on the mound after coming on in the second inning and taking it the rest of the way. Sowa pitched 3.2 innings and allowed two runs while striking out two batters. After two scoreless innings from both teams, Evart put up a run in the third. Manistee had an even bigger third inning, scoring four of its seven runs, and good pitching the rest of the way was enough to seal game two of the series.

LeRoy Pine River 5, Mason County Central 2 – GM1

The Spartans led in game one for the first four innings until Pine River tacked on two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to beat MCC, 5-2. In the loss, Drake McKay had a big game at the dish, going 2-3 with a double and an RBI. McKay’s hits were two of the Spartans’ three in the early game. Pierce Bladzik recorded the other hit with a double. Kaden Ruiz got the ball to start for MCC; he went five innings on three hits, two runs, and nine strikeouts. Pine River recorded three hits and two walks in the top of the sixth, which resulted in three runs to break the 2-2 tie. The Spartans did have a chance in the bottom half with two on and two out but were unable to score.

Mason County Central 12, LeRoy Pine River 3 – GM2

It was a completely different showing offensively for the Spartans in game two, as they drove in nine RBIs as a team and had five different hitters record hits. Bladzik knocked in three of those RBIs and recorded two hits in the three-hole for MCC. Star running back Peyton Merz got the nod in game two on the mound. He tossed four innings and gave up just two hits, allowing one run while striking out eight. Mason County Central put up a four-spot on the board in the bottom of the first, and from there, they continued to pile on runs and steamroll Pine River on the way to a 12-3 victory that split the doubleheader.
