As we get closer to the end of the season, and more importantly, the playoffs, every game matters more and more. Below, we recap what occurred over the weekend.
Muskegon Big Reds
Muskegon picked up two wins over the weekend—one on Friday and the other on Saturday. In their sixth OK-Green conference game of the season, the Big Reds took care of Jenison, 59-46. In a game where Muskegon had just a six-point lead at the half, they started the third quarter on a 10-0 run and carried it out to a win. Darryl Thompkins Jr. led all scorers with 18 points, followed by teammate Elija Langston with nine.
In the second game of the weekend for Muskegon, they played Ann Arbor Huron at Aquinas College. In a 66-46 statement win, James Young lit up the points column with 20 big ones. The team got off to a quick 9-0 run in the first quarter and headed into the locker room up 29-22 at the half. A stifling third quarter for the Big Reds allowed them to take a 43-27 lead, which they held onto for the rest of the game.
Whitehall 83 – Ludington 56
Camden Thompson led Whitehall with 24 points, which was enough to place him at number one on Whitehall’s all-time scoring list, passing legendary Dawn (Baker) Monnette. Even with two players scoring 20 points, Ludington knew they had their hands full coming into the game. Both Taij Williams and Cam Gunsell had breakout performances for the Orioles. The Vikings held a good grip on the game all night and kept extending their lead quarter by quarter. Whitehall improves to 13-2 and will travel to Rockford on Monday night.
Mason County Central 48 – Ravenna 45
Both squads displayed hard-nosed defenses Friday night, although MCC was able to escape with its ninth win of the season. Ravenna’s Dylan May led all scorers with 20 points. Cole VanderHaag scored 13 points in the winning effort, while his Spartan counterpart, Trent Hawke, also scored 13. Ravenna led after the first quarter, but that lead was soon diminished by a 13-point second quarter from the Spartans. MCC held onto its lead the rest of the night and stole one at home.
Fremont 70 – Montague 30
Fremont blew the Wildcats out of the water Friday night in an explosive 70-point performance by the Packers. Fremont wasted no time, opening the game with a 22-9 lead at the end of the first—a lead they continued to pour on throughout the rest of the game. Redick Powell led the Packers with 14 points, followed closely by Mossen Green, who scored 13 points.
