Danny Flanagan considers golf an escape from the pressures of life.
The Montague senior faced pressure Wednesday in a Division 3 regional at Old Channel Trail, but he handled it a champ. Flanagan was one of two players in a three-man playoff who secured individual spots in the Division 3 state finals June 10-11 at The Fortress in Frankenmuth.
The top three teams at a Michigan high school golf regional and top three individuals not part of qualifying squads earn spots in the state finals. Flanagan, North Muskegon senior Jason Bogue and Comstock Park senior Josh Berridge all shot 83 in their rounds Wednesday, so a playoff was held to determine which two of those three players advanced.
Led by regional medalist Will Preston, a sophomore who shot even-par 72, Grand Rapids Catholic Central ran away with the team title with a 308. Lake Odessa Lakewood finished runner-up at 326, followed by Grand Rapids Covenant Christian third at 340.
Belding senior Mason Anderson was a state finals qualifier individually with a 76.
Montague and North Muskegon were the top-scoring teams from the West Michigan Conference, both with 363, good for a sixth-place tie. Oakridge was 10th (378), Hart 13th (392), Shelby 17th (437) and Ravenna 19th (460).
Montague’s Brad Tate was named regional coach of the year.
