MUSKEGON — Spring Lake sizzled in the first half of its Division 2 boys district basketball opener against Montague on Monday with seven 3-point shots.

That sent the Lakers well on their way to victory and a rematch with second-ranked, unbeaten Whitehall.

Spring Lake sank nine 3s in the game overall and defeated Montague, 57-32, at Orchard View High School.

That sets the stage for Wednesday’s 7 p.m. district semifinal between Spring Lake (11-12) and Whitehall (22-0). Early in the season (Dec. 5), Whitehall beat Spring Lake, 50-44, in the Lakers’ gym.

In Nick Thaler’s first season as Montague’s boys head coach following two years at the girls helm, the Wildcats close with a 13-10 record.

Spring Lake senior Eli Morrison hit four 3s, three of them in the first half, to lead all scorers with 16 points. Sophomore Ayden Ayers made three triples en route to 11 points for the Lakers, who led 13-8 after one quarter but extended the margin to 30-17 by halftime. They continued to pull away in the second half.

Montague senior Owen Raeth scored a team-high 10 points, hitting a couple of treys along the way. Senior Paul Olson added seven points for the Wildcats.
