As the season hits its midpoint, the West Michigan Conference picture is starting to come into focus and the margin for error is getting smaller by the game.
At the top, consistency has separated contenders from the rest. Fremont and Ludington have surged into the early lead in conference play, while Shelby and Hart are right behind, each proving they have the pieces to challenge down the stretch.
And if this week showed anything, it’s that momentum can shift quickly.
Fremont and Ludington Setting the Pace
Fremont showed exactly why it belongs at the top with one of the most impressive responses of the week.
After a tough 7 to 1 loss to Traverse City St. Francis, the Packers bounced back in dominant fashion with an 8 to 0 mercy rule win over Manistee. Fremont controlled the match from the opening whistle, building a 7 to 0 halftime lead behind a relentless attack.
Roxy Martin led the charge with a hat trick, while Esther Vissia added two goals and two assists in a standout all around performance. Just days after being outshot 15 to 4, Fremont flipped the script completely, controlling possession and dictating the pace.
Ludington continues to match that level of consistency. The Orioles remained unbeaten in conference play with a 4 to 0 win over Oakridge, powered by two goals from Addison Torrez and a goal with two assists from Hestyn Stowe.
Ludington has relied on balanced scoring and strong defensive play throughout the season, key factors in maintaining its position at the top of the standings. A non conference loss to Mona Shores provided a challenge, but it does not impact their place in the conference race.
Together, Fremont and Ludington have set the standard, and the path to a conference title will likely run through one of them.
Chasing the Leaders
Shelby and Hart remain firmly in the mix just behind the top two.
Shelby sits at 3 and 1 in conference play and continues to show strong offensive production, including a dominant 5 to 0 win over Manistee earlier in the week.
Hart may be one of the most intriguing teams in the race. At 2 and 0 in conference play, the Pirates have fewer games but no losses. Hart backed that up with a 5 to 0 win over Whitehall, led by a hat trick from Natalie Rosema and two goals from Addison Barefoot, while allowing just one shot on goal.
If Hart continues to win, it could quickly climb into the top tier alongside Fremont and Ludington.
Middle of the Pack
North Muskegon and Ravenna sit in the middle of the standings, where each conference game carries added importance.
North Muskegon showed its strength with a decisive win over Montague. A program that is used to being at the top of the conference, it will be interesting to see how the Norse match up against current leaders Fremont and Ludington as the season progresses. Montague, meanwhile, continues to gain experience with a young roster as it works through a demanding conference schedule.
Teams like Manistee, Whitehall, and Oakridge are still searching for consistency as the second half of the season begins.

The Takeaway
At the halfway point, the conference race has a clear storyline forming at the top.
Fremont and Ludington have set themselves apart, but with Shelby close behind and Hart still unbeaten, the pressure is building.
The second half of the season will come down to consistency, adjustments, and how teams respond when the stakes continue to rise.
