Held in Montague, the Eric Scott Holiday MAT CAT Classic brought together a strong and competitive boys wrestling field, with 17 teams competing across 14 weight classes. The tournament takes place each year after Christmas and honors former Montague Wildcat coach Eric Scott, whose impact on the program and the sport continues to be remembered through the event.
This year’s tournament also marked a milestone for Montague athletics, as it was the first major wrestling tournament held inside “The Den,” Montague’s new performance gymnasium. The venue provided a high-energy setting for a full day of wrestling and added significance to an already well-established holiday tournament.
On the mat, the team race stayed tight from start to finish. Montague finished first with 193.5 points, narrowly edging Spring Lake, which placed second at 192 points. Hopkins took third with 178.5 points, followed by Allendale (169.5) and Muskegon (154). Several other programs, including Fremont, Hanover-Horton, Petoskey, Waverly, Orchard View, Hesperia, and North Muskegon, contributed to the competitive depth of the meet through podium finishes and key victories.
Individual champions represented a wide range of schools. C. Fuentes of Hesperia won at 106 pounds, while T. Christner of Spring Lake claimed the 113-pound title. Muskegon’s J. Diggs captured first at 120, and Hopkins followed with a championship at 126 behind W. Runkel. Allendale’s R. Silveira earned the 132-pound title, while A. Fielder of Hanover-Horton topped the 138-pound bracket. Hopkins added another champion at 144 with C. Anderson.
The middle and upper weights continued to show balance across the field. F. Thommen of Montague won at 150, L. Bradford of Muskegon claimed first at 157, and A. Hill of Spring Lake took the title at 165. Orchard View’s D. Flowers dominated the 175-pound bracket, while Montague’s I. French earned the championship at 190. The final two titles went to A. Hocter of Hanover-Horton at 215 and N. Walker of Hesperia at 285.
With championships spread across multiple programs, a close team race, and the debut of a new venue, the Eric Scott Holiday MAT CAT Classic once again delivered a strong showcase of boys wrestling and honored the legacy of a coach who helped shape the sport in Montague.
