Welcome to March, folks! You know what that means—it’s about to get crazy!
In our coverage area, CatchMark SportsNet is down to just two teams. Some in the sports media world might breathe a small sigh of relief as the season winds down—but not me. After just a week and a half of postseason play, we’re already down to two squads still fighting for a shot at Breslin. Here’s the kicker: both teams are facing the same opponents that ended their runs last year. Call it history, call it beef—either way, there’s no shortage of motivation heading into tonight.
Check out our breakdown below, and stay locked in for updates on our socials!
Ludington V Kingsford
Ludington has battled all season, and the postseason is no different. The Orioles roll into this one at 16-8 (including postseason games), fresh off a hard-fought 57-51 win over Standish Sterling. But now, they face a familiar foe.
Kingsford was the team that ended Ludington’s run last year in a gritty, low-scoring 37-34 battle. This year, they’re just as dangerous. Sitting at 20-3, Kingsford has steamrolled every postseason opponent so far, winning each game by at least 10 points.
For the Orioles, it all comes down to their dynamic duo—Taj Williams and Cam Gunsell. Both have been the go-to options under the leadership of experienced head coach Thad Shank. Williams put up 18.8 PPG in the regular season, with Gunsell not far behind, making them one of the most dangerous tandems in the state.
I don’t expect this one to be any different than last year—an absolute slugfest between two top-tier teams. Buckle up.
North Muskegon V Pewamo-Westphalia
When I said beef earlier, this might just be the Wagyu of it. Pewamo-Westphalia has been North Muskegon’s postseason kryptonite. Last year’s loss? An absolutely tragic buzzer-beater. You know that’s been sitting in the back of their minds, and the Norsemen will be playing with a serious chip on their shoulder.
North Muskegon comes in at 23-1 (including the postseason) and hasn’t just won in the playoffs—they’ve dominated. Pewamo-Westphalia, though? They’ve been just as battle-tested. Their 22-3 record may not look as flashy, but they’re every bit as dangerous.
The Norsemen will lean on their usual trio: Dugener, Burrell, and Byard. Dugener has been that guy in the postseason, averaging just under 25 PPG, while Byard and Burrell bring a deadly mix of three-point shooting and rebounding.
But don’t sleep on Pewamo. They’ve caught fire at the perfect time, winning their last four games by a ridiculous 168 total points. Oh, and they steamrolled their conference—undefeated.
This one’s shaping up to be a battle. Just like last year. Stay locked in for updates on our socials!
