Mason County Central falls just short of second straight boys district basketball title

Spartans hold lead late, but host McBain makes plays down stretch.

Mason County Central’s boys basketball program was aiming for a second straight district championship Friday night at McBain.

The Spartans gave it a run, but they fell just short, 37-35, as the host Ramblers made a few plays down the stretch to win on their home court in a Division 3 district finals matchup.

Mason County Central (7-15) led 33-29 with less than three minutes remaining on Will Chye’s 3-pointer, then 35-31 with less than two minutes left on another Chye bucket.

However, the Spartans did not score again and the Ramblers converted three baskets down the stretch, including the winner with 7.1 seconds remaining.

Chye led Mason County Central with 14 points and five rebounds. Kolden Myer added eight points and eight rebounds for the Spartans.

Evan Haverkamp finished with 13 points and eight rebounds for McBain, while Joseph Winkle scored 10 for the Ramblers (8-14), who will face Sanford Meridian in Monday’s regional semifinals.
